The Core 400S delivers about 400 cubic metres of clean air an hour, enough to cycle the air in a large living room several times an hour. Its laser sensor spots cooking smoke or pollen quickly and turns the fan up automatically.
Just as important, its three-stage filter is cheap to replace and easy to find. Reviewers consistently described it as the purifier that punches above its price.

For a bedroom, silence matters more than raw power. The Core 300S drops to about 22 dB in sleep mode and switches its lights off, while still cleaning a typical British bedroom several times an hour.

Blueair's electrostatic HEPASilent filtration lets the fan move a lot of air quietly. The Blue Signature is the best choice here for a large open-plan room, and its fabric-and-wood design earns it a place in view.
Its filters cost more than Levoit's, so budget for that over the years.

Dyson's quiet, compact purifier projects clean air well, but costs a lot for its size.
The HushJet Compact is Dyson's smallest purifier and one of its best. It projects air across the room rather than just cleaning what is nearby, and it is pleasingly quiet.
The problem is comparison: Dyson does not publish a standard clean air delivery rate, and you pay a lot more than for the Levoit 400S.

Match the CADR to your room
For allergies, aim to clean the air in a room about five times an hour. Multiply the room's floor area by its ceiling height (about 2.4 m in most British homes) and by five: a 20 m² room needs roughly 240 m³/h.
HEPA and carbon
A true HEPA filter (H13 or equivalent) captures pollen, dust, pet dander and fine smoke particles. A carbon layer reduces cooking smells and some gases. Avoid purifiers that rely only on ionisers.
Running costs
Purifiers use little electricity: running a Levoit 400S around the clock costs roughly £15 to £20 a year. Filters are the real cost, from about £25 to £80 a year.
