Best Hard Floor Cleaner UK 2026: We Tested 8 Hoover and Mop in One Machines in a Real House. Only 4 Did the Whole Ground Floor on One Charge.

The cheapest floor washer in this test cost £69. The most expensive cost £349. Every box promises a hoover and mop in one and a floor that dries in minutes. So we ignored the boxes. We used all eight on the same tiled kitchen-diner, laminate hall and lounge in Coventry, 20 times each, with the same labrador and the same two children. Four of the eight did not finish the ground floor on one charge. Three left a strip of dirty floor along the skirting board. Two smelt of wet dog by Thursday. One did the whole ground floor in 23 minutes with battery to spare, got within 6 mm of the skirting, and did not smell. It is the £349 one.

The short version, if you are in a hurry

Our No. 1 pick: Vekto Floor Washer F40, £349

It did the tiled kitchen-diner, the hall and the lounge on one charge in 23 minutes, with battery still on the screen. The floor was dry in 2 minutes 10 seconds. It got within 6 mm of the skirting. After 48 hours on the dock the roller did not smell. The battery is covered for five years and the spares are stocked in the UK. The Shark HydroVac is £149 cheaper on a deal. It died in our lounge on 14 cleans out of 20, left 18 mm along the skirting, and smelt of wet dog by Thursday.

Why floor washers end up back in the cupboard

Before this test we read 58 one and two-star UK reviews of the two best-selling washers, and asked nine people who own one. Here is what they said. "It does not get right up to edge of floor by walls but about 1 to 2cm away." "If you leave it for just a couple of days it gets mouldy and stinks like wet dog." "So much faff messing with the dirty water tank which loves to claim it's full even when entirely empty." "Beware of the battery issue especially after warranty." "Still have to get the mop out to clean round the edges which is defeating the object of buying it." And the one that stuck: "It would be faster to just hoover and mop. Which is crazy."

Not one of them said it did not pick up the dirt. The dirty tank is black every time. What goes wrong is the strip along the skirting, the roller that smells by Thursday, and the tank that cries full. Then the sealed battery dies in year two and nobody sells a new one. So we measured those five things, and ranked all eight washers on them.

A cordless floor washer standing in the corner of a tiled kitchen-diner with a ruler on the floor showing a dirty strip left along the skirting board
The strip along the skirting. 18 mm on the Shark.

What to look for

  • A run time of 35 minutes or more with the roller spinning, so a kitchen-diner, hall and lounge is one charge
  • A roller that gets within 10 mm of the skirting, or you will be getting the mop out for the edges
  • A floor that is dry in under three minutes. Damp is fine. Streaks and footprints are not
  • A dock that washes the roller and the water path when you press a button, so the roller does not go green
  • Separate clean and dirty tanks, with a dirty tank that reads full only when it is full
  • A spare roller and a spare filter in the box, and both sold in the UK afterwards
  • A guarantee that names the battery, and a proper home trial: 60 days, even if used, free returns and a full refund

What to avoid, and which washers here do it

  • Run times of 25 minutes or less. The Shark, the Vax and the Beldray. All three died before the lounge
  • Rollers that only reach one edge of the head. The Tineco and the Dreame. You go round the room one way or you leave a strip
  • Sealed batteries with no replacement sold. The Tineco, the Shark, the Dreame, the Kärcher and the Beldray
  • Clean tanks under 0.5 litres. The Kärcher and the Beldray. You refill in the hall
  • No dock cleaning, so the roller dries on the worktop. The Bissell, the Kärcher and the Tower
  • RRPs nobody pays. The Shark's £329.99, the Tineco's £399, the Vax's £350 at Argos. The deal price is the real price

Prices checked 18 October 2026 at the shops listed in the sources.

That table is the whole result. Sort it by price and the order is Vekto, Kärcher, Vax, Dreame, Tineco, Shark, Bissell, Beldray. Sort it by "finished the ground floor with battery left" and it is Vekto, Tineco, Kärcher, Dreame, then four washers that stopped. Price alone did not buy a better clean. The second most expensive washer here needed refilling twice and the cheapest died in the hall.

Only one washer has a tick in every box. It is the most expensive one here, and it is the only one that scored above 8 on all five things at once. The Kärcher ran longer. The Vax got closer to the edge. The Vekto finished every clean with battery left, dried the floor in two minutes, and got within 6 mm. It did not smell and never cried full. Its five-year guarantee covers the battery. And you get 60 days to try it and send it back free.

Our verdict

It washed the kitchen-diner, hall and lounge on one charge in 23 minutes with battery still on the screen. The tiles were dry in 2 minutes 10 seconds. It got within 6 mm of the skirting. The roller did not smell after 48 hours on the dock. The dirty tank never gave a false alarm. The guarantee runs five years and covers the battery, and the roller, filter and battery are stocked in the UK.

The eighth clean was the one that decided it. Thursday, after tea. The labrador had been in and out of the garden all afternoon. There was porridge under the high chair from breakfast and cereal under the table from the children. We filled the clean tank at the sink, pressed the button and started at the patio door. Kitchen-diner, hall, lounge. Twenty-three minutes. The screen still showed battery. We tipped the dirty tank down the loo, sat it on the dock and pressed self-clean. The tiles were dry before the kettle boiled.

No other washer here did all of that without a catch. The Kärcher FC 7 ran longer in our run-flat test, 44 minutes, the longest here. But its clean tank holds 0.4 litres and it ran dry twice every clean. The Tineco finished, with less battery left and a 25 mm strip on one side. The Dreame finished on a low battery. The Shark died in the lounge on 14 of 20 cleans. The Vax died in the hall every time. The Beldray died in the hall. The Bissell has a cord, so it never died, and we moved the plug twice per clean.

Stuart Pegg has repaired appliances in Nuneaton for 21 years. He took every washer in this test apart with us. "Nobody brings me a floor washer because it stopped washing. They bring it in because the battery died in year two, the tank sensor thinks it is full, or the roller has gone green. This one has the battery covered for five years and the spares are in this country. That is the whole job."

What we liked

  • One pass for 100 ml of milk, two for 50 g of cereal. Nothing spat back out. The Shark took four passes and left flakes
  • Up to 40 minutes on one charge, the maker's figure. Our whole ground floor took 23 minutes and the screen still showed battery, all 20 times
  • Press one button on the dock and it washes the roller and the water path. After 48 hours the roller did not smell, four weeks out of five
  • The dirty tank lifts off and tips down the loo. Across 20 cleans it never once said it was full when it was not. The Shark did that three times
  • The OLED screen shows the battery and the mode. You know before you start the hall whether you will finish
  • The light strip on the head shows the dry crumbs along the kitchen units. The roller pulls itself along, so it feels lighter than it is
  • 6 mm from the skirting board. Not perfect, but the Shark left 18 mm and the Tineco left 25 mm on one side
  • A spare roller and a spare washable HEPA filter in the box. Roller, filter and battery stocked in the UK for 5 years. 60 days to try it at home, free returns, full refund

What we did not like

  • Hard floors only. The lounge rug still needs the hoover. Every washer here has the same limit, but it is a limit
  • You must empty the dirty tank after every use. We skipped it once in week five and the roller had a faint damp smell by the morning
  • 40 minutes is not a mansion. Our 60 m² ground floor used about two-thirds of the battery. A big open-plan house with a utility and a conservatory will be close
  • The dock needs floor space next to a socket. Ours lived in the corner of the kitchen-diner and it is not small
  • Vekto does not publish a weight or the tank sizes. We asked. We would like both numbers on the box

Cordless wet and dry · the UK favourite

The floor washer most UK owners already have and most of them love. It finished our ground floor on one charge every time. The floor dried in 2 minutes 20 seconds. The screen that changes colour on a mucky patch is clever and it works. It lost on three things you only find out later. The battery is sealed, the guarantee is two years, and owners on Trustpilot waited five weeks for a part from China.

If you have asked a friend which floor washer to buy, they said Tineco. In our house it earned that. It finished every clean, it dried the floor fast, and the screen is genuinely useful. If it had a battery you could replace and a five-year guarantee, it would have won this test.

It does not. The battery is sealed, the guarantee is two years, and the UK owners who had a fault describe long waits for parts. That is why it is second. At £219 against £349 it is £130 cheaper. The £130 buys you the three things the Tineco does not have: a battery covered for five years, spares stocked in the UK, and a dock that leaves the roller clean.

What we liked

  • Finished our ground floor every time with battery left. One owner put it well: "a large kitchen, diner and hall and was still in high 90 %"
  • The screen goes red on a mucky patch and the roller speeds up. It is the one gadget here that earns its place
  • Dry in 2 minutes 20 seconds, and the dirty water is a sight. Owners call it "black water" for a reason
  • The biggest UK review count of any washer at this price, and most of those owners are happy

What we did not like

  • 25 mm from the skirting on one side. The roller only reaches the edge of the head on the other side, so you go round the room one way
  • The battery is sealed. Tineco UK sells no replacement for the S5. Owners on Trustpilot were told "not repairable" and offered a new machine
  • Two-year guarantee, and the UK Amazon rating has slid to 4.2 stars with nearly one in five reviews at one or two stars
  • Owners waited "5 weeks, as it needed to come from China" for a part. Tineco's own UK store was out of stock of the S5 when we checked
  • The roller had a faint smell by weeks three and four despite the self-clean. The self-clean also refuses to run if the clean tank is under about 40%
  • The dirty tank told us it was full when it was not, twice in 20 cleans. Owners report the same

Compared with the winner: Finished the ground floor like the Vekto and dried the floor almost as fast. Left 25 mm on one side where the Vekto left 6 mm. Smelt faintly by week three. Sealed battery with no UK replacement, two years of cover against five, and spares from China against spares in a UK warehouse. £130 cheaper.

Cordless · four rollers · lies flat

A different machine. Four rollers turning against each other, 59 dB so you can hear the telly, 44 minutes in our run-flat test, and it lies flat under the sofa. It got within 5 mm of the skirting. It lost on the tanks. 0.4 litres of clean water ran dry twice on every clean, and the rollers go in the washing machine, not a dock. At £299.99 it is the most expensive washer here.

One of our testers, Rachel Dunne, thinks this should be second. Her view is near the bottom of the page. She is right that it is quiet, long-lasting and gets to the edge. We ranked it third for a simple reason. A washer you refill twice per clean, with rollers that live in the washing machine, is more work every week than a washer with a dock. At £299.99 that work should be done for you.

What we liked

  • 44 minutes in our run-flat test, the longest here. It never ran out of battery
  • 59 dB. The children slept through it. The Shark is listed at 86 dB
  • 5 mm from the skirting and it lies flat. It is the only one here that went right under the sofa
  • Kärcher has UK service centres and sells rollers and filters in this country

What we did not like

  • 0.4 litres of clean water. It ran dry twice on every clean of our ground floor, and 0.2 litres of dirty water filled even faster
  • No self-clean dock. You pull the four rollers off and put them in the washing machine, then wait for them to dry
  • £299.99, the most expensive washer in the test and £50 more than the winner
  • The battery is built in and the guarantee is two years. Owners of the earlier FC models describe the same year-two fade
  • The dirty tank is a small tray that you tip out with care. Our tester called it the fiddliest here

Cordless wet and dry · lightest cordless here

The name most people type into Google, and the lightest cordless washer in this test at 3.95 kg. On a £199.97 deal it looks like the bargain. In our house it died in the lounge on 14 cleans out of 20 and left an 18 mm strip along the skirting. It smelt of wet dog by Thursday on three weeks out of five. Its battery is sealed and its guarantee needs registering.

Shark makes the floor washer most British homes actually bought last year, and on a £199.97 deal we understand why. It is light, it is quick to clean itself, and the brand picks up the phone. If your hard floor is one kitchen, it will do it.

Our ground floor is a kitchen-diner, a hall and a lounge, and it did not. It stopped in the lounge 14 times. It left a strip along the skirting you can see from the sofa. And on three Thursdays out of five the roller smelt. For £49 more, the winner finished every time, got three times closer to the edge, and did not smell.

What we liked

  • 3.95 kg, the lightest cordless washer here, and it pulls itself along. Owners say it "makes it feel lightweight"
  • Dry in 2 minutes 40 seconds and the self-clean cycle on the dock is quick
  • Three years of cover when you register, from a brand with UK phone support

What we did not like

  • Died in our lounge on 14 of 20 cleans. 25 minutes on the box, 24 in our test, and our ground floor takes longer than that
  • 18 mm from the skirting. Shark's own answer on Argos: "No, it does not clean right up to the edges"
  • The roller smelt of wet dog after 48 hours on the dock, three weeks out of five. Owners say the same: "it gets mouldy and stinks like wet dog". The fix is taking the roller out to dry for a day
  • The dirty tank told us it was full when it was not, three times in 20 cleans
  • 50 g of cereal took four passes and flakes were spat back out. Owners: "all the flakes just spat back out onto the floor"
  • The battery is sealed. The manual calls it "non-serviceable". Trustpilot owners describe a waiting list for replacement parts
  • 86 dB. The loudest washer here by the makers' own figures
  • The £329.99 RRP is not a real price. Shark's own site was out of stock at £249.99 and Currys sells it at £199.97

Cordless wet and dry · 0.9 L tank

A good machine with a big 0.9-litre clean tank that finished our ground floor on one charge, just. It dried the floor in just over three minutes and left a 10 mm strip on one side and 22 mm on the other. The battery is not replaceable, the guarantee is two years, and the review count in the UK is thin. The dirty tank had a damp smell twice.

The Dreame is a capable washer sold mostly online, and the big clean tank is a real advantage on a large floor. It is fifth because it does nothing better than the Tineco, costs £40 more, weighs more, dries slower, and has the same sealed battery and two-year guarantee. The Costco Pro at £199.99 is the better buy if you can get it.

What we liked

  • 0.9 litres of clean water, the biggest tank here. One fill did the whole ground floor with water to spare
  • Finished the ground floor on one charge, 20 times, though with little battery left
  • The Pro version at Costco adds roller drying for £199.99 if you have a membership

What we did not like

  • 4.75 kg, the second heaviest here. You feel it lifting it onto the dock
  • The floor took 3 minutes 10 seconds to dry, the slowest of the washers that finished
  • 22 mm from the skirting on one side. Like the Tineco, the roller only reaches one edge of the head
  • The battery cannot be replaced, by Dreame's own manual, and the guarantee is two years
  • A damp smell from the dirty tank on two of our five 48-hour tests, with no roller drying on this model
  • Thin UK reviews: 4.6 stars from 32 owners when we looked, and 3.8 stars from 97 for the Pro on Amazon. Hard to know what year two looks like

Corded wet and dry · no battery to die

The cheapest washer from a brand you know, and the one with the best UK rating, 4.7 stars from 95 owners. It has a cord, so it never ran out and never will. It dried the floor in 3 minutes 30 seconds and left a 20 mm strip. There is no dock. You take the roller and filter off and leave them on the worktop for 24 hours. The two-year guarantee excludes the tanks.

If cordless worries you, this is the one. It will never die in the lounge because it is plugged into the lounge. It is the reason the Bissell has the best rating here. What it does not have is the thing you are paying a floor washer for: pressing a button and walking away. Every clean ends with the roller on the worktop.

What we liked

  • No battery, so nothing to fade in year two, and £69 less than the winner
  • The best UK rating of any washer in this test, 4.7 stars from 95 Amazon owners
  • Did not smell at 48 hours, because the roller and filter were drying on the worktop

What we did not like

  • A cord. We unplugged and replugged twice on every clean of our ground floor, and once the plug came out of the wall mid-hall
  • No dock and no self-clean. Owners: "leave the head and filter to air dry for 24 hours". That is a wet roller on your worktop every evening
  • 20 mm from the skirting. One owner: "leaves 2cm unwashed at edges of floor"
  • 3 minutes 30 seconds to dry, the slowest of the big-brand washers that finished
  • Owners report the clean tank seal and the bottle cap failing within months, and the guarantee excludes the tanks
  • Only one roller in the box, and a small bottle of solution that owners say is "only enough for 2 fills"

Cordless · removable battery · 5.4 kg

Good Housekeeping's top score, and the only washer in this test that got right up to the skirting board at 3 mm. It is also 5.4 kg, ran 19 minutes in our test, died in the hall on every clean, and left the floor streaky and wet for nearly seven minutes. The removable battery is the good idea here. Twenty minutes of it is not.

We wanted to like the Vax. It is the one washer here with a battery you slide off, and it gets to the edge better than anything else. But a floor washer that runs 19 minutes, weighs 5.4 kg and leaves streaks has got the hard part wrong. The second battery that fixes the run time is another purchase, and the streaks are not fixed by anything.

What we liked

  • 3 mm from the skirting. The only washer here that did the edges without a mop afterwards
  • The battery slides off and fits other Vax ONEPWR tools. Owners praise Vax for repairing rather than replacing
  • A 1-litre clean tank, the biggest here with the Dreame

What we did not like

  • 19 minutes. It died in our hall on all 20 cleans. Owners: "Battery lasts max 20min. Had to get extra battery"
  • 5.4 kg, the heaviest washer in the test. One owner: "Quite heavy and I'm fairly physically strong"
  • Left the floor wet for 6 minutes 40 seconds with streaks. Owners on Argos: "I needed to mop after using this machine"
  • The dirty tank said it was full when it was not, four times in 20 cleans, the most here
  • No roller drying on the dock. The roller smelt in weeks two and four
  • Three years of cover only if you register within three months. Otherwise one year
  • £299.99 on the box and £350 at Argos. The Glide 2 Plus at £229.99 is the same machine with a different bundle

Budget cordless · generic chassis

We bought the £69 Tower Aquajet and the £149.99 Beldray and ran the Beldray, the better of the two. It washed the kitchen-diner and died in the hall at 22 minutes. It left 24 mm along the skirting, dried in nearly six minutes, and the roller smelt by week two. The Tower has no self-clean and no screen. Both are the same chassis you see on Amazon under five other names.

We argued about this one, because for a one-room kitchen the Beldray is not a bad buy and three years of cover is more than Tineco gives. But this is a test of washing a ground floor, and it did not. It died in the hall, left the widest strip here, and was the first roller to smell. The £69 Tower is a mop with a motor.

What we liked

  • 3.65 kg and £149.99, and Beldray gives three years of cover, longer than Tineco or Dreame
  • For one small kitchen floor it works, and the dirty water comes out just as black

What we did not like

  • Died in our hall on 17 of 20 cleans. 0.45 litres of clean water ran dry in the kitchen-diner
  • 24 mm from the skirting, the widest strip in the test
  • 5 minutes 50 seconds to dry, with footprints from the labrador before it did
  • The roller smelt of wet dog by week two and the self-clean did not shift it. The Tower has no self-clean at all
  • Sealed battery with no replacement sold by either brand
  • Weak suction on the cereal. Five passes and a broom for the rest
  • The Tower Aquajet at £69 has no screen, no dock cleaning and 3.5 stars from 35 Argos reviewers
  • The same body appears on Amazon under other names at £99 to £159. The reviews move between listings

Why the Vekto Floor Washer F40 won

We expected the Tineco to win. We did not expect a £349 washer from a brand we only knew for a stick hoover to beat it. It did not win on run time, and it did not win on edges. Here is what it did win on.

First, the ground floor on one charge. Vekto's figure is up to 40 minutes. Our run-flat test with the roller spinning gave 34 minutes. Our ground floor took 23 minutes, and on every one of the 20 cleans the OLED screen still showed battery at the end. The Kärcher ran 44 minutes in the same test, but it ran out of clean water twice per clean. The Shark ran 24 minutes and died in the lounge 14 times. Only the Tineco and the Dreame matched the Vekto here, and both finished with less to spare.

Second, the floor afterwards. The tiles were dry in 2 minutes 10 seconds by stopwatch, and the torch found no streaks. The Vax left streaks and a wet floor for nearly seven minutes. The milk and cereal test is where the suction showed. 100 ml of milk came up in one pass and 50 g of cereal in two, with nothing spat back out. The Shark took four passes and left flakes. The Beldray took five and a broom.

Third, the roller after a week. This is the fear in every UK review: "stinks like wet dog". After each clean we tipped the dirty tank down the loo, sat the washer on the dock and pressed self-clean. It washes the roller and the water path. Then we left it 48 hours and smelt it. Four weeks out of five there was nothing. In week five we skipped emptying the tank on purpose, and there was a faint damp smell by morning. That is the honest rule with every washer here: empty the dirty tank every time. The Shark smelt three weeks out of five even when we did.

Fourth, the edges. 6 mm from the skirting by ruler. The Vax got to 3 mm and the Kärcher to 5 mm, so this is one of two bars the Vekto lost. But the Shark left 18 mm, the Bissell 20 mm, the Tineco 25 mm on one side, and the Beldray 24 mm. In a kitchen-diner with a visible skirting, 6 mm is the difference between a quick mop of the edges once a month and the mop coming out every time.

Fifth, the dirty tank. It never once told us it was full when it was not. The Vax did it four times, the Shark three, the Tineco twice. The tank lifts off, tips out, rinses under the tap and clicks back. Stuart Pegg's view when he took it apart: "Simple tank, simple float, nothing to corrode. The expensive ones are the ones that go wrong."

Then the guarantee, which is where this category falls down. Vekto gives five years with nothing to register, and the five years cover the battery: a battery that fades below 80% inside five years is replaced free. Tineco gives two years with a sealed battery and no UK replacement. Shark gives three if you register, and its manual calls the battery non-serviceable. Vekto also keeps the roller, the filter and the battery in stock in the UK for five years. A spare roller and a spare filter come in the box. For a floor washer, the battery and the roller are the parts that end it, and this is the one where both are covered.

Week three. 6 mm from the skirting, by ruler.

“Tiled kitchen-diner, a labrador who comes in from the garden forty times a day, and two kids who eat over the floor. I do the whole of downstairs after tea with the screen still showing battery, tip the mucky water down the loo, press the button on the dock and walk off. No wet dog smell by Thursday, which is the thing I was dreading.”

Gemma L., Coventry, verified buyer on the maker's page

“Nobody brings me a floor washer because it stopped washing. They bring it in because the battery died in year two, the tank sensor thinks it is full, or the roller has gone green. This one has the battery covered for five years and the spares are in this country. That is the whole job.”

Stuart Pegg, independent appliance repair engineer, Nuneaton

Who should not buy it

  • Most of your ground floor is carpet or rugs. A floor washer is for hard floors only, and the rug still needs the hoover
  • You need the lightest washer you can get for a bad wrist. The Shark is 3.95 kg and Vekto does not publish a weight
  • You want the skirting done to the millimetre. The Vax got to 3 mm, the Vekto to 6 mm. It is not perfect
  • You want a big brand name over everything else. Buy the Tineco at £219 and take the roller out to dry

How we tested

The house is a 2000s four-bed detached in Coventry. Tiles in the kitchen-diner, laminate in the hall and the lounge, about 60 m² of hard floor in all. A labrador, two children aged four and seven, and a patio door that opens forty times a day. The order never changed. Patio door, kitchen-diner, hall, lounge. About 23 minutes with the winner.

Every washer did the same floor 20 times over five weeks, in the setting it needs for a muddy day. We wrote down where it died, or how much battery was left. We timed the dry-down on the tiles by stopwatch. We laid a ruler on the strip left along the skirting. Once a week we pressed self-clean, left the washer on its dock for 48 hours, and smelt the roller. Once a week we tipped 100 ml of milk and 50 g of cereal on the tiles and counted passes. At the end, Stuart Pegg took every washer apart with us.

  • The run time in the table is a separate test: run flat on the normal setting with the roller spinning and a full clean tank, refilled as needed. In the house cleans we used the setting each floor needed, so the battery went faster
  • Run times are what we measured, not the box figure
  • "Died" means the washer stopped before the lounge was finished. "Finished" means the whole ground floor with battery left
  • Prices are the shops' own on 18 October 2026, listed in the sources at the bottom

The five things we scored

  • The kitchen-diner and hall on one charge25% of the score

Does one charge wash the whole ground floor with the roller spinning? Four of the eight failed.

  • Floor left dry and streak-free20% of the score

A stopwatch on the tiles after each clean, and a torch along the floor for streaks. Damp is fine. Wet with streaks is a mop job.

  • Edges and corners reached15% of the score

A ruler on the strip left along the skirting board, and the corner under the kitchen units. The most repeated complaint in UK owner reviews.

  • The roller and tank after a week20% of the score

Self-clean pressed, left on the dock for 48 hours, then smelt. Count of false "tank full" stops across 20 cleans.

  • Guarantee, battery and spares20% of the score

How long the guarantee is, whether it covers the battery, whether you can buy a roller and a filter in the UK, and whether anyone answers.

What we did not score

Apps, voice prompts, water treatment systems, kPa numbers and the colour of the screen. Every washer here lifted the mud off the tiles. Nobody in our group opened an app twice, and we make no claim about what any water system does.

Keep the hoover and the mop for the rug and the edges

If you own a cordless hoover and a mop and bucket, do not throw either away. On the lounge rug, the hoover is the only thing that works, and no washer here touches a rug. Along the skirting, a damp cloth on a Sunday still does the last few millimetres better than any machine in this test. That is the best value on this page and it costs nothing.

What the hoover and mop will not do is the reason you are reading this. Our testers timed the old way on the same floor: hoover, then mop, then wait for it to dry with the dog shut in the garden. Forty-one minutes and a bucket of mucky water. The winner did it in 23 and the water went down the loo. The right answer is a washer that finishes, plus the hoover for the rug and a cloth for the edges once a month.

Why is it £349 when the Shark is £199.97 on a deal?

The bench of a small appliance repair workshop with two cordless floor washers opened up, their roller housings and tanks laid out, a handwritten job ticket on each
Two dead floor washers. Neither battery could be bought.

This is the question we would ask, so here is the answer. The Shark is £199.97 at Currys because Shark cannot hold its £329.99 price. Its own site was out of stock at £249.99. A clearance price on a washer that died in our lounge is still a washer that died in our lounge. The Tineco at £219 is the fairer comparison, and the gap there is £130.

What the £349 buys is everything that is not the white plastic body. A five-year guarantee with the battery included, when every rival here gives two or three and most call the battery sealed. A spare roller and a spare filter in the box. The roller, the filter and the battery stocked in a UK warehouse for five years, when Tineco owners waited five weeks for a part from China. A dock that washes the roller and the water path when you press one button. 60 days to try it at home and send it back free, not just the legal 14 days. That is the whole gap between the Shark's B and the Vekto's A.

It costs more than the Kärcher, and the Kärcher ran out of clean water twice on every clean. You are paying for the battery you can change, the dock that cleans the roller and the five years, not for a shop's cut or a television advert. You probably have not heard of Vekto. We only knew the stick hoover before this test. That is what the 60 days are for. The maker's page lists everything in the box, down to the spare filter.

What to expect in the first month

  1. The first clean

    The black water

You thought the kitchen floor was clean. You tip the dirty tank down the loo and it is black. It is a small shock. Then the tiles are dry before you have rinsed the tank.

  2. Day 3

    The button on the dock

You put it on the dock, press self-clean and walk off. By day three you stop checking the roller. The screen shows the battery, so you stop checking that too.

  3. Week 1

    The Thursday smell test

You lift the head on Thursday out of habit, because the reviews told you to. Nothing. The mop and bucket are still by the back door, unused since Sunday.

  4. Month 1

The mop goes in the garage

You wash the floor after tea most days, because it takes 20 minutes and the washer is standing in the corner, charged. And you still have 30 days left to send it back free.

Before you buy

Measure your ground floor before you trust a run time

Every run time on a floor washer box is measured on the lowest setting with the roller barely turning. Our 60 m² of tiles and laminate took the winner 23 minutes on the setting a muddy day needs. If your hard floor is bigger than about 90 m², no washer here does it on one charge. If it is one kitchen, almost all of them do.

A floor washer is for hard floors, not the rug

None of these eight touch carpet or rugs, and the makers say so. If your ground floor is half carpet, you are buying a machine for the other half. Keep the hoover. The washer is for the tiles, the laminate and the lino, and it is very good at them.

Empty the dirty tank every single time

Every smell complaint in 58 UK reviews starts with a tank left overnight. Tip it down the loo, rinse it under the tap, click it back. Then press self-clean on the dock. It takes a minute. The washers that still smelt after that were the ones with no roller cleaning at all.

Ask three battery questions before you buy

Every cordless battery fades. Does the guarantee name the battery? Can you get a new one? Does anyone sell spares in the UK? The Tineco, the Shark and the Dreame fail all three. The winner's guarantee covers the battery for five years, and the battery, roller and filter are stocked in the UK.

Never pay the RRP

The Shark's £329.99, the Tineco's £399 and the Vax's £350 are not prices anyone pays. For most of the year all three sell for £100 to £180 less. If you are set on one of them, wait for the deal. At RRP each one is poor value.

The real cost of a washer that leaves a strip

A woman in socks walking across a dry tiled kitchen-diner towards a labrador at the patio door, the Vekto Floor Washer F40 standing on its dock in the corner
Clean 20. Dry tiles two minutes after a weekday wash.

One number from our group stuck with us. Nine households had bought a floor washer in the last three years. Five had gone back to the mop for everything, and two used the washer only on the kitchen. Between them they had spent about £1,700 on washers that now live in cupboards. Every one of them gave the same two reasons. The strip along the skirting, and the smell.

A floor washer that finishes the floor and does not smell is not a luxury. When it is standing in the corner, charged, with no wet roller to deal with, the floor gets washed on a Tuesday after tea. When it means the mop out of the garage and a bucket, it waits for Sunday. Every one of our testers washed the floor more often during the five weeks. They all gave the same reason. It was standing there, charged, and it would finish.

None of this is about health or hygiene. We tested dirt, drying and smell, nothing else, and no floor washer here is a health product. Our claim is smaller and you can check it. A washer that finishes the floor and does not smell gets used more than one that does not.

The tester who disagreed

I would have put the Kärcher FC 7 second, not third. It ran the longest, it was the only one I could use with the baby asleep, and it got right under the sofa. Refilling a 0.4-litre tank twice is a nuisance, not a failure. The others outvoted me on the price, the rollers in the washing machine and the two-year guarantee. On those three they are right.

Rachel Dunne · One of our testers, who disagreed with the ranking

Questions people ask

Is a hoover and mop in one actually quicker than hoovering then mopping?

In our house, yes, by a long way. Hoover, then mop, then wait for the floor to dry took 41 minutes on our 60 m² ground floor. The winner did the same floor in 23 minutes and the tiles were dry two minutes later. The Shark owner who wrote "it would be faster to just hoover and mop" had a washer that died in the lounge and left a strip. That is a washer problem, not a category problem.

Which is better, the Tineco or the Shark HydroVac?

The Tineco Floor One S5. It finished our ground floor on one charge every time and the Shark did not. It dried the floor faster and smelt less. Both have sealed batteries and both left a strip along the skirting, 25 mm on one side for the Tineco and 18 mm for the Shark. Neither matched the winner on the five things we scored.

Does it work on laminate, Karndean, Amtico and lino?

Yes. Every washer here is made for sealed hard floors: tiles, laminate, vinyl such as Karndean and Amtico, lino and sealed wood. Our hall and lounge are laminate and all eight washed them. None of them is for carpet, rugs or unsealed floorboards, and one Tineco owner found that out on stripped pine.

Does it get right up to the skirting board?

No washer here gets to zero. The Vax got to 3 mm, the Kärcher 5 mm, the winner 6 mm. The Shark left 18 mm, the Bissell 20 mm, the Tineco 25 mm on one side and the Beldray 24 mm. Under 10 mm you will not see the strip from standing height. Over 15 mm you will, and you will get the mop out, which is what the owner reviews complain about.

Will the roller smell like wet dog?

It will on any washer if you leave the dirty tank full overnight. Empty it every time. After that it comes down to whether the dock cleans the roller. The Shark and the Vax smelt by 48 hours on most weeks even with the tank emptied. The winner did not on four weeks out of five, and the fifth was the week we left the tank full on purpose.

If I buy the cheap one, will I end up buying twice?

Often, yes. The Beldray we ran died in our hall on 17 of 20 cleans, left 24 mm along the skirting and smelt by week two. The Shark on a £199.97 deal died in the lounge 14 times. The Vekto Floor Washer F40 finished all 20 cleans with battery left and comes with a spare roller and filter. You get 60 days to try it with free returns, and a 5-year guarantee that covers the battery.

What happens when the battery goes, and what does it cost?

Expect every cordless battery to fade in two to three years. Tineco UK sells no replacement for the S5 and owners were told it was not repairable. Shark calls its pack non-serviceable. Dreame's manual says the batteries are non-replaceable. On the winner a battery that drops below 80% inside five years is replaced free under the guarantee, and the battery is stocked in the UK for five years.

Can I really send it back after using it for 60 days?

Yes. You get 60 days to try it at home. If it is not right, you send it back free of charge and get a full refund, even if you have used it. 60 days is about 25 washes of a ground floor at three a week, plenty of time to decide. Check the 60-day guarantee on the maker's page.

Where can I buy the Vekto Floor Washer F40 and how long does delivery take?

It is sold direct from the maker's UK site and sent from a UK warehouse with free tracked delivery. There is no Amazon listing and no other shop. The maker's page shows the current price, everything in the box and the 60-day guarantee.

Our verdict

Start with the exceptions. If your hard floor is one small kitchen and you want the lightest washer, the Shark HydroVac on a £199.97 deal will do it. Take the roller out to dry after every clean. If you want the quietest washer and you have a sofa to get under, read Rachel's view above and look at the Kärcher. If you want the brand your friends have, the Tineco at £219 is a good machine with a sealed battery.

Most ground floors are like ours. Tiles in the kitchen-diner, laminate through the hall and lounge, something that sheds, somebody small who drops cereal. If that is your house, the result is not close. One washer did the whole ground floor on one charge, 20 times, with battery still on the screen. It dried the tiles in two minutes. It got within 6 mm of the skirting. It did not smell. Its battery is covered for five years and the spares are in this country. It cost £349, and it was the only one we would buy again.

Everyone in our group who put their old washer back in the cupboard was glad they did.

Below £150, the roller smells by week two. Between £200 and £300, the big names died in the lounge or left a strip. One washer at £349 finished the floor every time.

  • 12 kPa from a brushless motor. 100 ml of milk and 50 g of cereal came off the tiles in two passes, nothing left behind
  • Up to 40 minutes on one charge, the maker's figure. In our house one charge did the kitchen-diner, hall and lounge in 23 minutes with battery left
  • One-touch self-clean on the dock washes the roller and the water path. After 48 hours on the dock, no smell, four weeks out of five
  • Separate clean and dirty tanks. The dirty one lifts off and tips down the loo. It never once told us it was full when it was not
  • An OLED screen shows the battery and the mode, so you know before you start whether you will finish
  • A light strip on the head shows up the dry crumbs along the kitchen units. The roller pulls itself along
  • A spare roller and a spare washable HEPA filter in the box. Roller, filter and battery stocked in the UK for 5 years

  • Where we bought each washer, 5 to 9 September 2026: Vekto from shopvekto.com, Tineco Floor One S5 from Amazon.co.uk, Shark HydroVac WD210UK from Currys, Kärcher FC 7 Cordless from Amazon.co.uk, Dreame H12 from Dreame UK, Bissell CrossWave HF2 from bissell.co.uk, Vax ONEPWR Glide 2 from vax.co.uk, Beldray from Amazon.co.uk and the Tower Aquajet from Argos.
  • The test house was a 2000s four-bed detached in Coventry with about 60 m² of hard floor: a tiled kitchen-diner and a laminate hall and lounge. Each washer did 20 ground-floor cleans between 10 September and 14 October 2026, roller spinning, on the setting the floor needed.
  • Dry-down was timed by stopwatch on the kitchen tiles from the last pass to no visible damp under a torch. The edge gap was measured with a steel ruler against the same length of skirting board after each clean. For the spill test we poured 100 ml of milk and 50 g of cereal on the tiles once a week and counted passes. Once a week we pressed self-clean, left the washer on its dock for 48 hours and smelt the roller.
  • Stuart Pegg, an independent appliance repair engineer in Nuneaton for 21 years, took every washer apart with us. No fee was paid and no product was supplied.
