Best Steam Mop UK 2026: We Tested 9 on Laminate, Tiles and Grout. One Left the Floor Dry in Under Two Minutes and Lifts Out as a Handheld Steam Cleaner.

The cheapest steam mop in this test cost £29.99. The most expensive cost £159.99. The boxes promise dry floors in seconds and steam that goes on for ages. So we timed it with a stopwatch. Same laminate hall, same tiled kitchen, same bathroom grout, in a three-bed semi in Birmingham with a toddler and a cat, 20 cleans each. Four left the laminate wet for more than three minutes. One was ready in 21 seconds and steamed for 23 minutes on one fill. It left the floor dry in a minute and forty, and it lifts out as a handheld for the grout and the hob. It costs £129.95.

The short version, if you are in a hurry

Our No. 1 pick: Vekto Steam Mop S20, £129.95

It was ready in 21 seconds, steamed for 23 minutes on one fill, and left our laminate dry in a minute and forty seconds. The handheld lifted the grey out of the bathroom grout and the burnt-on rings off the hob. It only takes tap water. The guarantee runs five years with nothing to register. The Shark 2-in-1 costs about £20 more, ran out of steam at 14 minutes and gives you 12 months unless you fill in a form.

Why most steam mops end up in the garage

Before this test we read 70 UK forum threads and review pages, and we spoke to nine people who own a steam mop. Here is what they said. "i now have a sopping wet floor, not good when youve got laminate down." "it dries with a greyish dust finish on the tile surface." "it didn't clean the grout on my quarried tiles floor, so still had to get down and scrub those." "stopped delivering steam after 13 months i.e. one month after the guarantee ran out." "The detergent compartment both occasions have disintegrated." "Having DC made me want to have less chemicals in the house." "Mine sits in the garage."

The box tells you the wattage and how many tools are in it. It does not tell you how long the floor stays wet, or how long the steam lasts before you are back at the tap. It does not tell you whether it will still be steaming in year two. So we timed all of it, and ranked all nine on the five things that send a steam mop to the garage.

A wet laminate hallway floor with streaks drying in the light and a child's sock print across it, a steam mop leaning against the wall
A rival mop, clean two. Wet for four minutes.

What to look for

  • A heat-up under 30 seconds, timed, not the box figure. If it takes minutes you will not get it out for the kitchen
  • At least 20 minutes of steam on one fill, so a three-bed downstairs is one tank
  • A tank you can see into, that takes tap water and nothing else. No detergent tank to crack
  • Two steam speeds, so laminate gets less water than tiles
  • A floor that is dry to the touch inside two minutes. Standing water is what lifts laminate, not steam
  • A handheld that lifts out of the body, so the grout, the hob and round the toilet get done with the same machine
  • A guarantee of more than one year with nothing to register, and pads you can still buy in year three
  • A proper home trial: 60 days, even if used, free returns and a full refund

What to avoid, and which steam mops here do it

  • A heat-up measured in minutes. The Kärcher SC 2 at six minutes fifty, the SC 3 at two and a half
  • A handle you pump for steam. The Shark S1000UK. Owners with shoulders send it back
  • A detergent tank. The Vax. It is the most complained-about part on its own reviews
  • Tools stored on the body that do not lock. The Vax. They fall off on every clean
  • A 12-month guarantee with a second year behind a 28-day form. All three Sharks. Owners find out at month 13
  • A pad that comes off mid-clean and a handheld that drips cold water. The £30 mops
  • RRPs nobody pays. The Shark S6005UK's £199.99. The deal price is the real price

Prices checked 18 October 2026 at the shops listed in the sources.

That table is the whole result. Sort it by price and the order is Kärcher SC 3, Shark 2-in-1, Shark Klik n' Flip, Bissell, Kärcher SC 2, Vekto, Vax, Shark Classic, the £30 mops. Sort it by how long the laminate stayed wet and the order changes. Vekto, Shark Klik n' Flip, Shark 2-in-1, Shark Classic, Bissell, Vax, Kärcher SC 3, the £30 mops, Kärcher SC 2. A higher price did not buy a drier floor. The two most expensive machines left it wettest.

Only one steam mop has a tick in every box. It is not the most expensive or the cheapest. It was ready in 21 seconds, steamed for 23 minutes, left the floor dry in a minute forty, and lifts out as a handheld for the grout. The Kärcher SC 3 has stronger steam, and it cannot do a quick floor. The Shark Klik n' Flip has a longer cord, and it cannot do the grout. The Vekto did both, and you get 60 days to try it and send it back free.

Our verdict

Ready in 21 seconds on our stopwatch. Steamed for 23 minutes on one fill of tap water, the longest of the uprights here. Left the laminate dry in a minute and forty seconds on the low speed, with no streaks on the kitchen tiles. The steam unit lifts out and did the grout, the hob and round the toilet. Five years of guarantee with nothing to register. The cord is the one thing we would change.

The twelfth clean was the one that decided it. A Tuesday after nursery. Dried apple juice on the laminate by the high chair, cat-litter grit in the kitchen, and the bathroom grout grey from a week of bath nights. We filled the tank to the line with tap water, 400 ml, and switched it on. 21 seconds later there was steam at the pad. Hall, lounge edge and kitchen on low. The juice came up in two passes on high. Then we lifted the steam unit out, did the grout lines round the toilet and the hob top, and clicked it back in. 23 minutes of steam. Water still in the tank. The laminate by the front door was dry before we had finished the kitchen.

Nothing else here did all of that on one fill. The Shark 2-in-1 ran out at 14 minutes, halfway across the kitchen. The Kärcher SC3 never runs out, because you top it up. But it took two and a half minutes to get going and left the laminate wet for nearly four. The Vax did the floors but its steam went weak at 13 minutes. The £30 mops heated up fast and then left a wet, streaky floor the toddler walked straight through.

Dean Whitlock has fitted floors in Solihull for 22 years. He took every steam mop here apart with us. "The ones that come back to me with lifted laminate were wet mops, not steam mops. The damage is standing water in the joints. This one puts very little water down and it is dry before you have walked back across it. That is what I want to see on a floor I have laid."

What we liked

  • 21 seconds from the switch to steam at the pad. You fill it, plug it in, and by the time the pad is on it is ready
  • 23 minutes of steam on one 400 ml fill in our house. Hall, kitchen and bathroom, with water still showing in the tank
  • 2000 W, the most on this page. On the low speed the laminate was dry to the touch in a minute and forty seconds. No streaks on the kitchen tiles
  • The steam unit lifts straight out of the body as a handheld steam cleaner. The grout line we photographed went from grey to near white in one pass
  • A 400 ml tank you can see into. You know when it needs topping up. It only takes tap water, so there is no second tank and no bottle of solution to buy
  • Two steam speeds. Low for laminate and sealed wood, high for the tiles and the sticky patches under the high chair
  • About 2 kg in the hand with an aluminium tube and a pivoting head that gets under the kitchen plinths
  • Five years of guarantee with nothing to register. 60 days to try it at home with free returns and a full refund. Pads are stocked for five years

What we did not like

  • The cord is 4.8 m. Shark's Klik n' Flip has 8 m. In our house the hall and kitchen needed two sockets. The Shark did them on one
  • No extra tools for the handheld in the box. The Vax comes with ten. You get the handheld itself, the two pads, the glider and the measuring cup
  • Not for unsealed wood or waxed floors. No steam mop is, but it is worth saying plainly
  • Hard water wants descaling. Birmingham water is soft, so we had no scale in five weeks. In Essex or Hampshire you would descale it as you do a kettle

Upright steam mop · lifts out as a handheld

The Shark that does the same job as our winner, from a company you have heard of, with 933 reviews behind it. The handheld pops out and the floor was dry and streak-free. It lost on the two numbers you feel every clean. It ran out of steam at 14 minutes on our stopwatch, and it was ready in 32 seconds, not 21. It also costs about £20 more and gives you 12 months unless you register it within 28 days.

If the Vekto did not exist, this would win. Shark sells more steam mops in Britain than anyone, and the S6005UK is the one that does both the floor and the handheld. It is well put together and the pop-out handheld is the easiest to use here.

Our problem with it is simple. 14 minutes of steam is not enough for our downstairs. We refilled it on every clean. And in Shark's own one and two star reviews, the most common line is a mop that stopped steaming a month or two after the first year. The second year of cover depends on a form.

What we liked

  • The handheld pops out with one press and the steam blast did the hob and the grout well
  • The floor was dry in two minutes ten and we found no streaks on the tiles
  • A 6 m cord. Our hall and kitchen on one socket
  • Shark pads are in every Argos. You will never be short of a pad

What we did not like

  • Ran out of steam at 14 minutes on every one of our 20 cleans, halfway across the kitchen. Shark's own figure is up to 15 minutes
  • 32 seconds to heat up against 21. Not a lot, until you are refilling it twice a clean
  • No carpet glider in the box. Shark's own page says it can be bought as an accessory
  • 12 months of guarantee as standard. The second year needs a form within 28 days of buying. The one and two star reviews on Amazon keep saying it stopped steaming at 13 to 20 months
  • £149 at Shark and £159.99 at Argos when we checked. About £20 more than the winner

Cylinder steam cleaner · you drag it behind you

This is a different kind of machine. A cylinder on wheels with a hose, a 1-litre boiler at 3.5 bar, and a floor tool on the end. It did the best job on the grout and the hob of anything here, by a long way. It also took two and a half minutes to be ready, left our laminate wet for nearly four minutes, and you drag 3.1 kg round the furniture behind you. For a weekly floor clean it is the wrong tool. For a filthy bathroom it is the right one.

We argued about this one. If the test were only the bathroom, the SC 3 would win it. Dean Whitlock's view after he opened it up: "That is a boiler, not a kettle. The pressure is real. But nobody is getting this out to do the kitchen on a Tuesday."

That is the point. Our test is a floor clean three times a week with a toddler in the house. The SC 3 took longer to get going than our winner took to do the hall. The floor stayed wet long enough for the toddler to walk through it twice.

What we liked

  • The best steam on this page. 3.5 bar from a proper boiler. The grout line went white, and the limescale round the bath taps came off
  • You can top it up while it is hot, so it never runs out mid-clean
  • Kärcher spares and tools are easy to buy, and the brand has UK repair centres
  • Two years of guarantee, and the descaling cartridge means hard water is dealt with

What we did not like

  • Two and a half minutes to be ready. Which? measured 150 seconds. For a quick going-over after tea you will not bother
  • Left the laminate wet for nearly four minutes. Owners on Amazon say the same: "Leaves my floors much wetter" and water marks on laminate
  • 3.1 kg on wheels behind you, with a hose and a 4 m cord. It catches on every door frame
  • The descaling cartridge is a running cost. One floor cloth and one hand cover in the box, and the cloth "gets wet very fast"
  • £159.99, the most expensive here, and £30 more than the winner

Compared with the winner: More steam and better on the grout than the Vekto, by a clear margin. But two and a half minutes to be ready against 21 seconds, and the laminate stayed wet more than twice as long. You drag 3.1 kg behind you instead of pushing 2 kg. Two years against five, and £30 more.

Upright steam mop · no handheld

The Shark steam mop most British homes own, with 1,469 reviews at John Lewis at 4.6 stars. The flip pad is clever: when one side is dirty you flip the head and carry on. It left the laminate dry in under two minutes and it has the longest cord here. It lost on one thing. There is no handheld. The grout, the hob and the toilet are not a steam mop's job on this machine.

This is a very good floor mop and we would not argue with anyone who owns one. The flip head is the best pad idea on this page. The cord is the best cord. If you already own a handheld steamer, or you never want one, the Klik n' Flip is the floor-only mop to buy.

But the handheld was one of our five tests, and this mop scored nothing on it. A quarter of the questions in the UK forums we read were about grout, the hob and the shower. This mop cannot answer any of them.

What we liked

  • The flip pad. One side gets dirty, you flip the head, you carry on. Two sides, one pad change
  • Dry in a minute fifty-five on our laminate, the second fastest here
  • 8 m of cord. The whole downstairs on one socket, the only mop here that managed it
  • 1,469 reviews at John Lewis at 4.6 stars. Pads in every Argos

What we did not like

  • No handheld. The grout, the hob and round the toilet are not this mop's job
  • A 350 ml tank. One Argos owner put it at about 40 square metres before a refill. In our house it was one refill per clean
  • It does not stand up on its own. You lean it on the worktop
  • 12 months of guarantee plus a form. One Argos owner: "This is our second model in 3 years"
  • £139.99, which is £10 more than the winner, for a mop that does less

Upright steam mop · 3-in-1 with a wand

At 1.86 kg it is the lightest 2-in-1 here and the easiest to carry upstairs. It has a long 7.6 m cord and a grout tool in the box. It was slower to heat up than the winner and ran out of steam at 14 minutes. Its handheld is a wand on a hose, not a unit you lift out. There is no on/off switch on the body. Two years of guarantee.

The SlimSteam is a sensible mop that is slightly behind on everything we timed. It is light and the cord is long. It never did anything badly. It also never did anything first, and at £139.99 it costs £10 more than the mop that did.

What we liked

  • 1.86 kg. The lightest 2-in-1 here and the one our tester with the bad wrist liked
  • 7.6 m of cord. Hall and kitchen on one socket
  • A grout tool, a scraper and an angle tool in the box. The grout tool did a fair job on the bathroom floor

What we did not like

  • Ran out of steam at 14 minutes, every clean. One refill for our downstairs
  • 33 seconds to heat up. The slowest of the uprights with a handheld
  • The laminate took two and a half minutes to dry, and we found water marks on the kitchen tiles twice
  • No on/off switch on the body. You switch it off at the plug
  • The wand is awkward over a hob. You hold the hose and the mop body stands beside you on the worktop
  • One MoneySavingExpert owner: "Bissell only lasted about 6 months, and needed a new filter every 6 weeks only available from manufacturer"

Cylinder steam cleaner · you drag it behind you

The smaller Kärcher cylinder. The same real pressure as the SC 3, and the same good result on the grout. But it took six minutes and fifty seconds to be ready on our stopwatch. Kärcher's own figure is 6.5 minutes. You cannot top it up while it is hot. You wait for it to cool, unscrew the cap, fill it, and wait again. It left our laminate the wettest of any machine here.

Kärcher's own figure for the heat-up is 6.5 minutes. We timed six minutes fifty. That number alone puts this machine in the wrong test. It is a steam cleaner for a Saturday deep clean, not a steam mop for the kitchen floor on a Tuesday. On our rung of the shelf, at £134.99, it is the wrong tool for the job the price suggests.

What we liked

  • Real boiler pressure, 3.2 bar. Good on the grout and the oven door
  • Kärcher spares, UK repair centres, two years of guarantee
  • 19 minutes of steam on a fill, the second longest here

What we did not like

  • Six minutes fifty to be ready. Kärcher says 6.5 minutes. Which? measured 399 seconds. You put the kettle on and wait
  • You cannot refill it hot. One Amazon owner: "if you need to refill the tank you have to wait a while for it to cool down to undo the tank screw"
  • Left our laminate wet for over four minutes, the wettest result in the test. Owners say the water marks are especially noticeable on laminate
  • You hold the trigger the whole time. There is no lock. "I do find it hurts my fingers to hold down the steam button"
  • A 4 m cord. One Argos owner: "i cannot do one room with out having to move the plug"
  • 2.9 kg on wheels behind you, round the table legs
  • No carpet glider. One floor cloth and one hand cover in the box

Upright steam mop · lifts out as a handheld

The cheapest 2-in-1 from a name you know, and the one with the most in the box. Ten tools, a glider and a bottle of Vax detergent for its second tank. It was ready in 24 seconds. Then it went downhill. Its steam went weak at 13 minutes, it weighs 3.7 kg, the tools fell out of their holder, and the floor stayed wet. Vax's own site rates it 3.9 stars from 291 owners, and the guarantee is one year.

The Vax is the trap on this shelf. The box is full, the price is low, and the brand is on every high street. Then you lift it. Then the detergent tank cracks, which is the thing Vax owners write about most. Then it stops steaming at 13 months and the guarantee was for 12. We would rather have two pads and five years than ten tools and one.

What we liked

  • Ready in 24 seconds, close to the winner
  • Ten tools, a glider and a 7 m cord in the box for £89.99. On paper the best value here
  • The handheld comes off with one click and did the oven door

What we did not like

  • 3.7 kg. The heaviest upright here by a long way. Owners call it "VERY heavy" and our tester's wrist agreed
  • The steam went weak at 13 minutes on every clean
  • The floor stayed wet for three and a half minutes, and with the detergent setting on it was wetter still
  • The detergent tank. In Vax's own one and two star reviews it is the most complained-about part: "The detergent compartment both occasions have disintegrated"
  • The tools fell out of their holder on the body on every clean. Owners: "all the little nozzle attachments just keep falling off"
  • One year of guarantee. 3.9 stars from 291 owners on vax.co.uk. A quarter of the one and two star reviews say it stopped steaming within two years
  • The second year on older listings needs registering. One MoneySavingExpert owner was refused at 16 months for not registering

Upright steam mop · you pump the handle

Shark's cheapest mop and its best seller, with 6,575 ratings on Amazon. It is light, it is well made for £44.99, and the floor dried quickly. The catch is in the handle. There is no switch and no trigger. You pump the handle up and down to make steam, all the way round the house, and it stops the moment you stop. No handheld. 12 months of guarantee.

We understand why it sells. It is £44.99 with a shark on the box. On our first clean the pumping was a novelty. By the fifth it was the reason nobody wanted to do the kitchen. It is a steam mop for someone who has never had one. It is not the steam mop you keep.

What we liked

  • 1.8 kg and well built for the money. Shark pads everywhere
  • The floor dried in two minutes twenty, better than three mops that cost twice as much

What we did not like

  • You pump the handle for steam. A quarter of Shark's one and two star reviewers name it: "You have to keep pumping for the steam to come out"
  • The steam "steams for 2 seconds then cuts out" when you stop pumping. One owner with shoulder arthritis sent it back for that alone
  • No handheld, no tools, no glider
  • No on/off switch. You switch it off at the plug
  • 12 months of guarantee plus a form. A third of its one and two star reviews say it stopped steaming inside two years
  • A 375 ml flask you cannot see into while mopping

Upright steam mop · the brand name changes

We bought three and ran the best one, the Tower RSM16 16-in-1. It heated up in 18 seconds, the fastest here, and its box lists 13 attachments and a handheld. Then the pad came loose mid-clean, cold water ran out of the handheld like a tap, and the floor stayed wet for nearly four minutes. One year of guarantee, two more if you register. 3.6 stars from 297 owners at Argos.

Every forum thread we read has someone saying their £30 mop is brilliant. Every thread also has someone saying it died at eleven months. Both are true. The body is the same body the factories sell to everyone. What you are not buying is a tank that clicks in properly, a pad that stays on, and anyone to ring when it stops steaming. Dean Whitlock on the Tower: "The heater is fine. It is everything that clips onto it that is not."

What we liked

  • 18 seconds to heat up. The fastest on this page
  • £29.99. If it does one year it has cost you 58p a week

What we did not like

  • The pad came loose on four of our 20 cleans. Argos owner: "The floor pad constantly comes loose while you're cleaning, so you're forever stopping to reattach it"
  • The handheld, in one owner's words: "bulky, awkward, and when filled with water it becomes heavy and difficult to manage"
  • Cold water ran out of the handheld on two cleans. "the could water was running down on the floor, like a little tap"
  • The floor stayed wet and streaky for nearly four minutes
  • 11 minutes of steam on a fill. Two refills for our downstairs
  • The Russell Hobbs we also bought: "came with a 1 year guarantee and broke exactly when it ended". The handle snapped off a second one
  • Extra pads for the Tower are not on the Tower website. One owner: "or any other parts for that matter"
  • 3.6 stars from 297 owners at Argos. One year of cover, and the extra two years need a form

Why the Vekto Steam Mop S20 won

We expected the Shark 2-in-1 to win. We did not expect a £129.95 mop from a brand we had not heard of to beat it on every number we timed. It did not win on cord length, and it did not win on raw steam pressure. Here is what it did win on.

First, the time to steam. Vekto says ready in 20 seconds. Our stopwatch said 21, averaged over 20 cleans. The Sharks took 31 to 34 seconds, the Bissell 33, and the two Kärchers took minutes. That sounds small. It is the difference between a mop you get out after tea and one you save for Saturday.

Second, the steam per fill. Vekto says up to 25 minutes from the 400 ml tank. We timed 23 minutes on the low speed and 19 on high. Every other upright here ran out between 11 and 16 minutes. In our house, 23 minutes is the hall, the kitchen, the bathroom floor and the grout, on one fill of tap water. The tank is clear, so you can see the level drop. Dean Whitlock's view when he opened it: "That's a 2000 W element on a 400 ml tank. It gets the water hot fast and keeps it there without flooding the pad. That is the right balance."

Third, the dry floor. On the low speed the laminate was dry to the touch in a minute and forty seconds. Only the Shark Klik n' Flip came close. The kitchen tiles had no streaks and no water marks on any of the 20 cleans. The two speeds matter here. Low for the laminate, high for the dried juice by the high chair, which came up in two passes.

Fourth, the handheld. The steam unit lifts out of the mop body in one movement and you are holding a handheld steam cleaner. We photographed the same grout line on the bathroom floor before and after on every clean. By clean three it had gone from grey to near white. The hob rings came off with the steam and a cloth. There are no extra tools in the box for it, which we have listed as a con, and we did not miss them for the grout or the hob.

The guarantee is where most mops at this price fall down. Vekto gives five years with nothing to register. Shark gives 12 months plus a form, Vax gives one year, and the £30 mops give a year from a seller you cannot ring. Pads are stocked for five years. It only takes tap water, so there is no detergent tank to crack. The cord is 4.8 m, which is shorter than Shark's 8 m, and the body is an aluminium tube at about 2 kg. UKCA, CE and RoHS marked. You get 60 days to try it at home and send it back free with a full refund.

A minute forty. The mopped side is already dry.

“Laminate all through downstairs and a two-year-old who thinks juice goes on the floor. Tuesday it was proper sticky by the high chair. Filled it with tap water, it was going before I'd got the pad on, two passes on the high setting and it was gone. Floor was dry before she'd finished her nap. My old Vax left puddles.”

Priya M., Birmingham, verified buyer on the maker's page

“The ones that come back to me with lifted laminate were wet mops, not steam mops. The damage is standing water in the joints. This one puts very little water down and it is dry before you have walked back across it. That is what I want to see on a floor I have laid.”

Dean Whitlock, floor fitter, Solihull

Who should not buy it

  • Your downstairs is unsealed wood or waxed boards. No steam mop belongs on those floors, this one included
  • You want a conservatory or a big open-plan room on one socket. The Shark Klik n' Flip's 8 m cord beats the Vekto's 4.8 m
  • You want a bag of handheld tools in the box. The Vax comes with ten. The Vekto comes with the handheld itself and nothing else for it
  • You want boiler pressure for a filthy bathroom once a month and you have a mop and bucket for the rest. Buy the Kärcher SC 3

How we tested

The house is a 1960s three-bed semi in Kings Heath, Birmingham. Laminate in the hall and through the lounge doorway, tiles in the kitchen and the bathroom, carpet in the lounge. A toddler, a cat, and two adults. The order never changed. Hall, kitchen, bathroom floor, then the grout and the hob with the handheld where there was one, then the lounge carpet with the glider where there was one.

Every steam mop did the same floors 20 times over five weeks, on the setting the maker says to use for laminate. We filled each one to its line, started a stopwatch at the switch, and stopped it when steam reached the pad. We timed how long each fill steamed before it went weak. We timed how long the laminate by the front door stayed wet. We photographed the same grout line on the bathroom floor before and after. We dried a spoon of apple juice on the laminate overnight and counted the passes to lift it. At the end, Dean Whitlock took every machine apart with us.

  • Heat-up and steam time are averages over 20 cleans on each mop, with tap water. Birmingham water is soft
  • "Dry" means dry to the back of a hand, checked every ten seconds
  • The carpet glider was used on the lounge carpet to refresh it. We did not score it, because none of them cleaned a carpet
  • Prices are the shops' own on 18 October 2026, listed in the sources at the bottom
A tester kneeling on a tiled kitchen floor holding a stopwatch beside a steam mop head, a measuring jug and a row of microfibre pads on the worktop behind
Clean seven. Timing how long the tiles stay wet.

The five things we scored

  • Ready fast, steams long enough25% of the score

Seconds from the switch to steam at the pad, timed with a stopwatch. Minutes of steam per fill, timed. Four ran out before our kitchen was done.

  • Floor dry and streak-free25% of the score

Minutes until the laminate was dry to the touch, timed. Streaks and water marks checked on the kitchen tiles once dry.

  • The handheld and the awkward bits20% of the score

Bathroom grout before and after. The hob. Round the toilet. Whether there is a handheld at all, and how heavy it is.

  • Easy to live with15% of the score

Weight in the hand. Whether the cord reaches. How the pads go on and come off. How you refill it and whether you can see the water.

  • Guarantee and what breaks15% of the score

How long the guarantee is, whether you have to register it, whether pads are stocked, and what the one and two star owners say broke.

What we did not score

Germ-kill percentages, tool counts and carpet cleaning. We have no way to count germs in a kitchen. Every mop here lifted dried juice with enough passes. None of them cleaned a carpet, they lifted the pile a little, and that is all a steam mop does on carpet.

Keep the mop and bucket for the big spills

If you own a mop and bucket, do not throw it out. When the cat knocks the water bowl over, or a whole beaker of juice goes down, a wrung-out mop picks up liquid faster than any steam mop here. It costs nothing. That is the best value on this page.

What it will not do is the reason you are reading this. It leaves the floor wet for ten minutes. It pushes the dirt into the grout. It wants a squirt of something in the water, and then the toddler crawls across it. The right answer is a steam mop that is dry in two minutes for the three-times-a-week clean, and the bucket under the sink for the floods.

Why is it £129.95 when a similar-looking mop is £30 on Amazon?

A workbench with three steam mops opened up, their heating elements and water tanks laid out in a row, one tank cracked
Three mops that stopped steaming. One tank had cracked.

This is the question we would ask, so here is the answer. The body of a steam mop is not the expensive part. The same factories that build for the big names will sell a 1,500 W body to anyone with an Amazon seller account. That is why the £30 mops exist, and why one of them heated up faster than anything else here.

What £129.95 buys is everything that is not the body. A 2000 W element on a 400 ml tank, so the steam lasts 23 minutes instead of 11. A tank that clicks in and does not drip. A pad that stays on. Two speeds. A steam unit that lifts out as a handheld. Stock in a UK warehouse, so it arrives in days. 60 days to try it at home and send it back free, not just the legal 14 days. Five years of guarantee with nothing to register, and pads stocked for five years. That is the whole gap between the £30 mops' D and the Vekto's A.

It is also why it does not cost as much as a Shark. There is no shop taking a cut and no advert in the break on a Saturday night. You probably have not heard of Vekto. Neither had we before this test. That is what the 60 days are for. The maker's page lists everything in the box, down to the measuring cup.

What to expect in the first month

  1. The first clean

    The pad comes off grey

You do a floor you thought was clean, turn the pad over, and it is grey. It is a small shock. Then the floor is dry before you have put the mop away.

  2. Day 3

    The handheld comes out

You lift the steam unit out to do the grout round the toilet, because it is already hot and in your hand. You were not going to do that with a toothbrush.

  3. Week 1

    One fill, the whole downstairs

Hall, kitchen, bathroom and the hob, and there is still water in the tank. You stop refilling halfway round, because you never have to.

  4. Month 1

The bucket stays under the sink

You steam the kitchen after tea because it takes four minutes and the floor is dry by the time the dishwasher is on. And you still have 30 days left to send it back free.

Before you buy

Is it safe on laminate?

Steam is not what lifts laminate. Standing water in the joints is. Dean Whitlock has refitted laminate that was ruined by a mop and bucket and never by a steam mop that dried fast. Use the low speed, keep the head moving, and never leave it standing on the floor while hot. Unsealed wood, waxed boards and some glued vinyl floors are different. If the maker of your floor says no steam, listen to them.

Time the heat-up, not the wattage

The box tells you the watts. What you feel is the seconds. Anything under 30 seconds you will use after tea. Anything measured in minutes becomes a Saturday job, and then a cupboard job. The Kärcher SC 2's own figure is 6.5 minutes. The Vekto's is 20 seconds, and we timed 21.

Count fills, not millilitres

A three-bed downstairs with a hall, a kitchen and a bathroom takes about 20 minutes of steam. Most uprights here gave 11 to 16 minutes, so one refill per clean. The winner gave 23 minutes on one fill and we never refilled it mid-clean.

Tap water, and descale it if yours is hard

Scale is what kills most steam mops, and "stopped steaming" is the top complaint for every brand here. In a hard-water area, Essex, Hampshire, most of the south east, run a kettle descaler through it every couple of months, as you do your kettle. Or use filtered water. Birmingham water is soft and we had no scale in five weeks.

Wash the pads, no softener

Pads go in the washing machine at 60 with the towels. Never fabric softener, which coats the fibres and makes the pad slide instead of grip. Hang them to dry. A pad that is still damp going on puts more water on the floor.

Never pay the RRP

The Shark S6005UK's £199.99 and the Shark Classic's £64.99 are not prices anyone pays. The Sharks and the Vax live on deals. If you are set on one of them, wait for the deal. At RRP each one is poor value.

The real cost of a steam mop that leaves the floor wet

A toddler in socks walking across a dry laminate hallway towards the kitchen, the Vekto Steam Mop S20 standing by the wall with its light on
Clean 20. Dry floor, socks still clean.

One number from our nine owners stuck with us. Between them they had bought fourteen steam mops. Nine of those were in a garage, a loft or the cupboard under the stairs. Not broken, most of them. Just not worth the faff, because the floor stayed wet, or the steam went weak, or the tools kept falling off. About £900 of steam mops, and most of them still mopping with a bucket.

A steam mop that is dry in two minutes is not a luxury. When the floor is dry before the kettle has boiled, the kitchen gets done after tea on a Tuesday. When it means keeping a toddler out of the kitchen for ten minutes, it waits for the weekend, and then it waits for the garage. Everyone in our group did the floor more often during the five weeks. They all gave the same reason. It was quick, and it was dry.

None of this is medical. Steam does kill germs where it sits long enough, and we have not counted any. A clean floor does not treat allergies or stop a child catching anything. Our claim is smaller and you can check it. A steam mop that is dry in two minutes gets used more than one that is not.

The tester who disagreed

I would have put the Kärcher SC 3 first, not third. It is the only machine here with real pressure. The grout went white. The hob came up like new. The oven door, which was not even in the test, came up too. Dry time counts for too much. You wait four minutes, so what. The others outvoted me on the heat-up, the weight and the price. On a floor three times a week, they are right. In my bathroom, I am.

Rachel Okafor · One of our testers, who disagreed with the ranking

Questions people ask

Are steam mops any good, or do they just wet the floor?

It depends which one. Four of the nine here left our laminate wet for more than three minutes, and owners are right to complain about them. Two were dry inside two minutes. The difference is the wattage against the tank size and a low speed for laminate. The winner was dry in a minute forty and we found no streaks in 20 cleans.

Can I use a steam mop on laminate flooring?

On sealed laminate, yes, on the low speed, keeping the head moving. What lifts laminate is standing water in the joints, which is a mop and bucket problem more than a steam problem. Not on unsealed wood, waxed boards or glued vinyl the maker says to keep steam off. Our floor fitter has never been called to a laminate floor ruined by a steam mop that dried fast.

Is a Shark steam mop worth the extra?

The Shark 2-in-1 is a good machine and came second. It ran out of steam at 14 minutes, took 32 seconds to heat up, and costs about £20 more than the winner. The second year of its guarantee needs a form within 28 days. If you want the name, buy it on a deal and register it the same day.

If I buy the £30 one, will I end up buying twice?

Often, yes. The Tower we ran heated up in 18 seconds and then the pad came off mid-clean and the handheld dripped cold water. Its owners say spares are not sold and the guarantee ends at a year. The Vekto Steam Mop S20 comes with a tank that clicks in, a pad that stays on, 23 minutes of steam and a handheld. You get 60 days to try it with free returns, and a five-year guarantee with nothing to register.

Do I need distilled water?

Not in a soft-water area. Birmingham water is soft and we ran tap water for five weeks with no scale. In a hard-water area, descale it every couple of months as you would a kettle, or use filtered water. Scale is what makes steam mops stop steaming, which is the top complaint for every brand here.

Does the handheld actually clean grout and the hob?

Yes, with a cloth. Steam softens the grey in the grout and the burnt-on rings on the hob, and you wipe them off. The winner's handheld took the bathroom grout from grey to near white in three cleans. The Kärcher SC 3 did it faster with more pressure. The Shark Klik n' Flip and the Shark Classic have no handheld at all.

Can I really send it back after using it for 60 days?

Yes. You get 60 days to try it at home. If it is not right, you send it back free of charge and get a full refund, even if you have used it. 60 days is about 25 floor cleans in our house, plenty of time to decide. Check the 60-day guarantee on the maker's page.

Where can I buy the Vekto Steam Mop S20 and how long does delivery take?

It is sold direct from the maker's UK site and sent from a UK warehouse with free tracked delivery. There is no Amazon listing and no other shop. The maker's page shows the current price, everything in the box and the 60-day guarantee.

Our verdict

Start with the exceptions. If your problem is a filthy bathroom once a month and a greasy cooker, the Kärcher SC 3 has the pressure and we would happily own one. Keep the mop and bucket for the everyday floors, and read Rachel's view above first. If you want a floor-only mop with a long cord and a name you know, the Shark Klik n' Flip on a deal is a good buy. You will need something else for the grout.

Most three-bed semis are like ours. Laminate in the hall, tiles in the kitchen and bathroom, grout that has gone grey, and something small that puts juice on the floor. If that is your house, the result is not close. One steam mop was ready in 21 seconds and steamed for 23 minutes on one fill. It left the floor dry in a minute forty, and lifted out to do the grout and the hob. It takes tap water. It is covered for five years with nothing to register. It cost £129.95.

Everyone in our group who replaced their old steam mop was glad they did.

Above £140 you are paying for the name or for a boiler you will not get out on a Tuesday. Below £50 there is nobody behind it. In between, one steam mop did everything.

  • 2000 W. The highest wattage on this page. On the low speed our laminate was dry in a minute and forty seconds
  • The steam unit lifts out of the body as a handheld steam cleaner, for the grout, the hob and round the toilet
  • A 400 ml tank with a visible water level, so you can see when it needs topping up. Tap water goes in, nothing else
  • Pivoting 25 × 15 cm head on an aluminium tube, about 2 kg in the hand. Two microfibre pads, a carpet glider and a measuring cup in the box
  • Five years of guarantee with nothing to register, 60 days to try it at home with free returns, and pads stocked for five years

  • The test house was a 1960s three-bed semi in Kings Heath, Birmingham, about 90 m² over two floors. Each steam mop did 20 full floor cleans between 13 September and 17 October 2026.
  • Heat-up, steam per fill and floor dry time were timed with a stopwatch on every clean and averaged. The grout line on the bathroom floor was photographed before and after each clean. For the sticky test a spoon of apple juice was dried on the laminate overnight and the passes to lift it were counted.
  • Dean Whitlock, a floor fitter in Solihull for 22 years, took every machine apart with us. No fee was paid and no product was supplied.
