Best Spot Cleaner UK 2026: We Tested 9 on the Same Sofa and Stair Carpet. Only 3 Left the Sofa Dry by Teatime.
The cheapest spot cleaner in this test cost £49.99. The most expensive cost £199.99. Every box shows a brown tank of dirty water. None of them says how wet the sofa is afterwards. So we sprayed 500 ml into the same grey sofa cushion with each one and weighed what came back out. Then we timed how long the cushion took to dry. Six of the nine were still damp at bedtime. One pulled back more water than anything else, has a hose you can unplug and buy again, and is guaranteed for five years with no form to fill in. It costs £179, £30 more than the Bissell at full price.
We bought every spot cleaner here ourselves. If you buy through a link on this page we may earn a small commission. Independence

Our No. 1 pick: Vekto Spot Cleaner P30, £179
It pulled back more of the water we sprayed in than anything else here, so the sofa was dry by teatime. The dirty tank lifts off and empties in one tip. The hose unplugs and can be bought on its own, which no Vax or Shark hose can. The guarantee is five years with no form to fill in, and any carpet shampoo is allowed. The Bissell SpotClean Pro has bigger tanks and costs £30 less at full price, but it weighs 5.9 kg and its hose does not come off.

or read the full test first ↓Why people ask if it leaves the sofa wet
Before this test we read 120 one and two star reviews and three Mumsnet threads, and spoke to nine people who own a spot cleaner. The first question is always the same. "Does it not leave the sofa wet?" The owners answer it. "Yes it cleaned my sofa cushion but left it almost wringing wet!" "The ratio of sprayed water to what was being sucked back up into the dirty tank was wildly different." Then the noise. "It's very noisy - I have to pop my headphones on when I'm using it." "Was going to get stuck in this evening but it is v noisy and kids are in bed." Then the hose. "The hose has become hard and has split at both ends. It is currently held together with Duct tape." And the one thing every owner loves: "Couldn't believe the colour of the water when I finished, didn't think it was that bad!"
Every box shows the brown tank. No box says how much of the water you sprayed in came back out, how loud it is in a lounge, or what happens when the hose splits. So we measured the first one, sat in the room for the second, and asked each maker about the third. Then we ranked all nine on the five things that decide whether a spot cleaner gets used or lives under the stairs.

What to look for
- A machine that pulls most of the water back out. Ours got 78% of 500 ml back. Below 65% the sofa is damp at bedtime
- A dirty tank at least two-thirds the size of the clean one, so it does not cut out with the clean tank half full
- A clean tank of 1.5 litres or more. A three-seater took about 1.6 litres in our test
- A hose that unplugs from the body and is sold on its own. Every hose in this class splits eventually
- Two tools: a stiff brush for carpet and a soft one for sofas, mattresses and car seats
- A cord of 5 m or more, so it reaches the top of the stairs from a hall socket
- A guarantee that names the pump and the hose, needs no registration, and does not care which shampoo you use. Plus 60 days to try it, free returns and a full refund
What to avoid, and which spot cleaners here do it
- Dirty tanks under 0.8 litres. The Vax Home Duo, the Shark and the Vytronix. They cut out before the sofa is done
- A hose fixed to the body with no spare sold. Both Bissells, both Vaxes and the Shark. When it splits, the machine is scrap
- Guarantees that need a form. Vax within 3 months, Shark within 28 days. Miss it and you are on 12 months
- "Use only our shampoo" rules. Vax, Shark and Hoover all void or threaten the guarantee on anyone else's bottle
- Cords under 5 m. The Shark's did not reach our landing
- A listing whose brand name is different from the one on the box. The £37 Amazon machines. There is nobody to contact

That table is the whole result. Sort it by price and the Vax Pet-Design comes first, then the Vekto at £179, then the Bissell Pet Pro. Then four machines at £149 to £150, then the Vax Home Duo, then the £49 Amazon one. Sort it by water pulled back out and the order is Vekto, Bissell Pro, Bissell Pet Pro, Kärcher, Hoover, Shark, Vax Pet-Design, Vax Home Duo, Amazon. Price did not predict a dry sofa. The two Vaxes, loved and well reviewed, left the most water in it.
Only one machine has a tick in every box. It is not the most powerful and it does not have the biggest tanks. It is the only spot cleaner that scored above 8 on all five things at once. The Bissell Pro holds more water, and the Vax Pet-Design got more stains out in one go. The Vekto left the sofa driest, has a hose you can buy, and is guaranteed for five years with nothing to fill in. And you get 60 days to try it and send it back free.

Our verdict
It pulled 390 ml of our 500 ml back out of the sofa cushion, the most here, and the cushion was dry in three hours. Thirty stains, 26 gone in one pass. Both tanks lift off and go under the tap. The hose unplugs and is sold as a spare. Five years on the motor, pump and hose, no form, any shampoo. It is not quiet and it has no heater, and we say so below.
The eleventh stain decided it. A full glass of blackcurrant squash, tipped down the side of the grey sofa cushion on a Saturday morning and left for an hour. We filled the clean tank from the kitchen tap, added a cap of shampoo, and sprayed the cushion until it was properly wet. Scrubbed with the stiff brush. Then the dry stroke, slowly, watching the window on the brush. Purple water, then brown, then clear. We lifted the dirty tank off and poured it into a measuring jug. 390 ml of the 500 ml we had sprayed in. The cushion was dry to the touch at ten past one.
Then we did the same cushion with the other eight. The Bissell SpotClean Pro got 375 ml back and was dry just after two. The Vax Home Duo got 290 ml back and was still damp at six. The £49 Amazon unit got 260 ml back and was damp when we went to bed. On the cream stair carpet the pattern held. The spot cleaners that pulled the most water back were the ones that left no ring.
Ian Wrigley has cleaned carpets and sofas in Macclesfield for 24 years. He took every machine in this test apart with us. "In twenty-four years the ones that come back to me aren't broken. They've got a hose held on with tape, a pump that stopped spraying, and a tank that stinks. This one's hose comes off, the pump's covered, and both tanks lift off and go under the tap."
What we liked
- The best water recovery in the test. 390 ml of 500 ml came back out of the sofa cushion, and the cushion was dry to the touch in three hours
- 26 of 30 stains gone in one pass. The window on the stiff brush shows the water run brown, then clear, so you know when to stop
- The hose unplugs from the body with one push. When a hose splits, and in this class every hose splits eventually, you buy a hose. Nobody else here sells one you can fit yourself
- Both tanks lift straight off. The dirty tank tips out in one go over the sink and rinses clean. No water left sitting in the body
- 1.8 litres of clean water did the whole three-seater on one fill. The Vax Home Duo and the Shark needed two
- 3.5 kg. One hand on the banister, one hand on the machine. The 5.9 kg Bissell needed two hands and a rest on the landing
- Any low-foam carpet shampoo. We used a £4 bottle from Home Bargains for six weeks and the guarantee does not care
- Five years on the motor, pump and hose with nothing to register. 60 days to try it at home, free returns, full refund
What we did not like
- No heater. The water goes in at the temperature it comes out of your tap. The Hoover HS5 Heat and the Bissell ProHeat warm it, and warm water helps on grease
- No motorised brush. You scrub by hand. The Vax Pet-Design's spinning brush did the chocolate in one pass where this took two
- 80 dB. That is a hoover-and-a-bit, and you will not use it after the children are in bed. Nothing in this test is quiet
- The cord is 5 m. It reached the top of our stairs. The Bissell's 6.5 m reaches further, and a bungalow hallway may want an extension lead

Portable spot cleaner · corded · 750 W
The one most British homes already own, and the one Mumsnet picks. 750 W, a 2.8-litre clean tank and a 2.2-litre dirty tank, the biggest here. It pulled 375 ml back out of the cushion and did the whole sofa and the stairs on one fill. It lost on the things you feel. It weighs 5.9 kg. The hose does not come off. And the "3 years" on the box is "2 years" on Amazon and at Currys.
If the Vekto did not exist, this would win. It cleans well, it holds a lot of water, and the people who own one love it. Mumsnet's home editor made it her best overall in May. Wirecutter picked it in America years ago. The engineering is not in question.
Our problem with it is simple. It is heavy, it is loud, and when the hose goes, the machine goes with it. It is also £30 cheaper than the winner at full price, and we have weighed that against the hose and the five years. Ian Wrigley summed it up when he lifted it: "That's a lot of machine to carry up to a bedroom for a patch of sick."
What we liked
- The biggest tanks in the test. 2.8 litres of clean water did the sofa, the stairs and the Zafira boot on one fill
- 375 ml of 500 ml back out of the cushion, second only to the winner. 27 of 30 stains gone in one pass, the best score here
- 8,785 reviews on Amazon at 4.6 stars, 913 at Argos at 4.8. Spares and tools are sold everywhere
- The whole lid comes off the dirty tank, so it rinses properly
What we did not like
- 5.9 kg empty, about 8.5 kg with the clean tank full. Our tester carried it up the stairs in two trips and rested it on the landing
- The hose is fixed to the body. Bissell owners on Amazon describe it splitting where it bends round the machine, "held together with Duct tape". Then it is a new machine
- Loud. Bissell prints 84 dB, and its own Amazon page has 195 reviewers mentioning noise, 178 of them unhappy
- The guarantee is "3 years" on Bissell's site and "2 years" on Amazon and at Currys. One owner was told two years when the hose split
- No stock at bissell.co.uk when we checked. Argos had it at £129.99, and Amazon at £149.99

Best for: A big house with a lot of carpet to spot clean, a strong back, and a cupboard near the stairs to keep it in.
Who should not buy it: you carry it upstairs often, you have a bad wrist, or you want the hose to outlast the guarantee.
Compared with the winner: Bigger tanks and one more stain gone in one pass. But it is 5.9 kg against 3.5 kg, and its hose does not come off where the Vekto's can be bought. Its guarantee is three years on one page and two on another. The Vekto's is five years with no form. The Vekto costs £30 more at full price, and the five years and the hose are what the £30 buys.

Portable spot cleaner · corded · pet tools
The SpotClean Pro with a pet tool. The Stain Trapper has a cup in the head that catches the solid mess before it goes down the hose. With a spaniel in the house we used it a lot. Same 750 W, same big tanks, same 5.9 kg, same fixed hose. At £169.99 it costs £10 less than the winner. On a £126.99 deal it is a good buy.
This is the one to buy if your spot cleaner's main job is what the dog did. The trapper cup works, and emptying a cup is nicer than finding the solids in the dirty tank. Everything else about it is the SpotClean Pro, good and bad, for £10 less than the winner.
What we liked
- The Stain Trapper tool keeps the solid part of a dog accident in a cup, not in the hose. With pets, that is worth having
- 370 ml back out of the cushion and 26 stains gone in one pass. The same strong suction as the Pro
- Two sample bottles in the box, so you can start the day it arrives
What we did not like
- £169.99 at Bissell, and no stock when we checked. The deal price comes and goes
- 5.9 kg. The same two-trip carry up the stairs as the Pro
- The hose is fixed. The same "radius of the curve is too tight" split that Pro owners describe, and no spare hose to buy
- 84 dB. Amazon owners describe cats hiding and children covering their ears
- 20,820 ratings worldwide at 4.4 stars, lower than the Pro. The one and two star reviews are about leaking from the base

Who should not buy it: you have stairs and a weak wrist, or you are paying £169.99.

Portable spot cleaner · corded · 400 W
Good Housekeeping's winner at 95 out of 100, and £109.99 at Argos most weeks. It is light, it has a hose-rinse setting, and the tool kit is the biggest here. But it got only 290 ml of our 500 ml back out of the sofa cushion, which was still damp at six o'clock. The guarantee is two years only if you register within three months, any non-Vax shampoo voids it, and Vax will not sell you a hose.
We wanted this to do better, because at £109.99 it is the one we would have told a friend to buy before this test. It is well made and light and the tools are good. Then we weighed the dirty tank. It left more water in the sofa than any big-name machine here, and Good Housekeeping found the same.
The guarantee is the other problem. Two years, but only if you fill in a form in the first 90 days, and only if you buy Vax shampoo for the rest of its life. When the hose splits, and Vax owners say it does, there is no hose to buy.
What we liked
- £109.99 at Argos when we checked, the cheapest big-name machine here. 2,694 Amazon reviews at 4.4 stars
- Good Housekeeping's category winner, 95 out of 100. 25 of 30 stains gone in one pass
- A hose-rinse setting flushes the hose into the dirty tank, and the box has a wide tool, a crevice tool and a messy tool
- 4.5 kg, light enough for the stairs in one hand
What we did not like
- Only 290 ml of 500 ml came back out of the sofa cushion. Good Housekeeping said the same: "Left some surfaces wetter than we'd have liked"
- A 1.1-litre clean tank and a 0.72-litre dirty tank. The three-seater took two fills, and the dirty tank was full before the clean one was empty
- The guarantee is two years only if you register within three months. Miss it and you have twelve. An owner on Trustpilot: "only if you give them your data within 3 months"
- Vax's own user guide says other shampoos "may cause excess foaming and will invalidate your guarantee"
- The hose cannot be replaced. An Argos owner: "I had hoped that Vax would have supplied replacement hoses to fix this problem but they have not"
- Eight of the sixty one and two star Amazon reviews we read are about the spray stopping between three and fifteen months
- 89 dB on the John Lewis spec sheet, the loudest figure printed on anything here

Compared with the winner: £69 cheaper and lighter in the hand. But it left 100 ml more water in the cushion, needed two fills for the sofa, and its guarantee needs a form, Vax shampoo and luck with the hose. The Vekto's needs nothing and covers the hose for five years.

Portable spot cleaner · corded · motorised tool
The only machine in the test with a brush that spins for you. On chocolate ground into the stair carpet it was the best thing here, 28 of 30 stains gone in one pass. Then the rest of the Vax story. 300 ml of 500 ml back out and a sofa damp at six. A guarantee that needs a form, and a hose that splits and cannot be bought. At £199.99 it is the most expensive machine here. On a £110 deal it is a different argument.
The Pet-Design is a good idea. Let a motor do the scrubbing and the stain comes out in one pass. On the chocolate stair it beat everything, and we would not argue with anyone who buys one at £110. At £199.99, for a machine that left the sofa wet and sells no spare hose, we would.
What we liked
- The spinning brush does the scrubbing. 28 of 30 stains gone in one pass, the best score in the test
- 1,852 Amazon reviews at 4.5 stars and 1,015 at Argos at 4.7. People who own one like it
- The messy tool keeps the solid part of a pet accident out of the hose
What we did not like
- £199.99 at Vax. That is £20 more than the winner for a brush that spins
- 300 ml of 500 ml back out. The spinning brush gets the stain out and then leaves the water in
- 35 Amazon customers mention durability, 26 unhappy. "The hose splits after two years" and "The hose cannot be replaced"
- Two years only if registered within 90 days. An owner on the Amazon page: "the 2 year warranty doesn't apply if you don't register within the first 90 days"
- Vax shampoo only, or the guarantee is void. Vax prices its own bottles at about £4.50 for 250 ml
- The spinning tool is the part most likely to fail, and Vax carves "functional parts" out of the guarantee after 12 months
- Nine of sixty one and two star Vax reviews we read were about the box arriving opened, used, or without the shampoo

Portable spot cleaner · corded · 1.9 m hose
A proper German brand with the longest hose in the test at 1.9 m and a hose-rinse setting. It pulled 350 ml of our 500 ml back out, the best of the non-Bissell rivals. Then it stops being a spot cleaner and becomes a small carpet washer: a big, awkward body, a 1.7-litre tank, 83 dB, and a two-year guarantee. 83 reviews on Amazon at 4.0 stars, and 3 at AO at 3.0.
If your job is a hall carpet rather than a sofa, the SE 3 is the one here that comes closest to a small Rug Doctor. For a sofa cushion, a stair and a car seat it is more machine than you want to lift. The people who own one do not seem to love it.
What we liked
- The longest hose here. 1.9 m let us leave the body on the hall floor and do the first four stairs
- 350 ml of 500 ml back out, better than any Vax or Shark here, and a hose-rinse setting
- A crevice tool in the box, which the winner does not have
What we did not like
- It is big and awkward on a stair tread. Our tester called it "a tiny Henry on a diet"
- 22 of 30 stains gone in one pass. The spray is a mist and needs several passes to wet the fabric
- 83 dB and a deep motor note that carried through the floor into the bedroom above
- Two years. Kärcher's own copy steers you to its cleaner, and Which? tested a Kärcher and could not recommend any spot cleaner
- 83 Amazon reviews at 4.0 stars and 3 at AO at 3.0. Few owners, and the ones there are lukewarm
- £149.99 at Screwfix for a two-year guarantee, with no 60-day home trial
- The hose was not listed as a spare on the UK page we read, so we have marked it "partly"

Best for: A bungalow with a lot of hall carpet and no stairs to carry it up.
Who should not buy it: a sofa, a staircase or a car. That is what a spot cleaner is for.
Compared with the winner: A longer hose, a crevice tool and a rinse setting, for £30 less at full price. But 40 ml more water left in the sofa and four fewer stains gone in one pass. A bigger body to lift, two years against five, and no 60 days to try it.

Portable spot cleaner · corded · 400 W
Hoover's new spot cleaner for 2026, sold direct. 400 W, 10 kPa, a 1.5-litre clean tank, a 1.67 m hose and a window squeegee in the box. It pulled 330 ml of our 500 ml back out and the cushion was damp at six. Its 0.8-litre dirty tank filled before the sofa was done. Two years, Hoover shampoo only, and almost nobody has reviewed it yet.
The HS5 is new and we do not want to be unfair to it. The hose is long and the squeegee is a nice idea. But it left the sofa wet and the dirty tank is too small for the clean one. At £149.99 it is £30 less than the winner, for two years and a shampoo rule. Hoover's own HS5 Heat at £99.99 is the better Hoover.
What we liked
- A 1.67 m hose and a 5 m cord. It reached everywhere the winner did
- 3.96 kg, and 450 ml of shampoo in the box
- A squeegee tool for hard floors, which nothing else here has
What we did not like
- 10 kPa, the lowest printed suction here. 330 ml back out and a sofa damp at six
- 20 of 30 stains gone in one pass. The coffee on the cream stair carpet left a ring on two of three tries
- A 0.8-litre dirty tank against a 1.5-litre clean one. It filled and cut out with the clean tank half full
- Two years. Hoover's own FAQ says a non-Hoover shampoo "can damage the product, and may void your warranty"
- Between 1 and 44 reviews on Amazon, depending on the listing. Nobody knows yet how it lasts
- £149.99 for a 400 W machine with a two-year guarantee is the full-price shelf, and the HS5 Heat with a heater is £99.99 on offer
- Hoover does not list the hose as a spare on the page we read

Amazon marketplace · the brand name changes
We bought two and tested the better one, a Vytronix with 2,317 reviews. It is a 450 W machine with a 1-litre tank, a 1.2 m hose and a hose-rinse port, and it works. It got 260 ml of our 500 ml back out and the cushion was damp at bedtime. The unrated £37 listings beside it are the same body as several branded machines with a different sticker. When it breaks, the shop may have a new name.
We argued about this one, because the Vytronix is not a bad machine for £49.99 and 2,317 people have rated it. If we ignored the guarantee and the wet sofa it would come sixth. But a spot cleaner is a pump, a motor and a hose, and all three wear. What matters when one goes is who you ring. For these listings the answer is a shop that may not exist, and a hose nobody sells.
What we liked
- £49.99. A hose-rinse port, which three machines costing £100 more do not have
- It sucked up the blackcurrant and it emptied without leaking. For a one-off it does a job
What we did not like
- 260 ml of 500 ml back out. The cushion was damp at bedtime and we put a towel on it
- 18 of 30 stains gone in one pass. Coffee and chocolate both left a ring
- 4.2 kg for a 1-litre tank. Heavier than the winner and holds half the water
- 1.2 m of stiff hose. On the stairs your ear is next to the motor
- The £37 to £41 listings beside it have no reviews at all and a different brand name each month. The reviews on the £49 one belong to the £49 one
- The "2-year warranty" is a marketplace seller's promise. No UK phone number, no spares, no address
- Good Housekeeping's budget pick went to a different cheap brand. Nobody independent has tested the unrated ones

See our No. 1 pick instead »Why the Vekto Spot Cleaner P30 won
We expected the Bissell SpotClean Pro to win. It has the biggest tanks, the most reviews and a bigger motor. It did not win, so here is what the Vekto won on.
First, the water comes back out. We sprayed 500 ml into the same grey sofa cushion with every machine, then weighed the dirty tank on a kitchen scale. The Vekto got 390 ml back, 78%. The Bissell Pro got 375. The two Vaxes got 290 and 300. The £49 Amazon unit got 260. The cushion dried in three hours with the Vekto and was still damp at six o'clock with five of the others. Ian Wrigley's rule from 24 years of sofas: "If it comes out wet, it dries slow, and if it dries slow, it smells."
Second, the hose. It unplugs from the body with one push, and Vekto sells it on its own. We asked every maker here the same question: can I buy a hose? Vax owners on Argos and Amazon have asked for years and been told no. Shark's hose is "integrated and not sold as a separate part". Bissell's does not come off. Ian's view after six weeks: "Every spot cleaner I've ever seen dies at the hose. This is the first one where that's a ten-minute job and a few quid."
Third, the tanks. A 1.8-litre clean tank did the whole three-seater on one fill. The 1.3-litre dirty tank lifts straight off, tips out in one go and rinses under the tap. We left it a week with a splash of dirty water in it, on purpose. It did not smell. The Vax Home Duo and the Shark both needed two fills for the sofa and both cut out with the dirty tank full and the clean one half empty.
On the stains we will be careful, because this is where spot cleaner marketing is at its worst. 26 of 30 stains went in one pass: all the blackcurrant, all the muddy paw, all the sick, four of six chocolate and three of six coffee. The two that needed a second go were ground-in chocolate on the stair and old coffee on the sofa arm. The Vax Pet-Design's spinning brush did better on those, and the Bissell Pro matched or beat us on one. No spot cleaner here shifted the ten-year-old mark on the landing, and Which? says the same about every one it tested.
The guarantee is where the brands fall down. Five years on the motor, the pump and the hose. Nothing to register, no 90-day window, no 28-day window, and you can use any low-foam carpet shampoo without a letter from anyone. Spares are kept for five years. Suction is 12 kPa from a 500 W motor, the maker's figures, and it is 80 dB, which is loud. For a spot cleaner, the hose and the pump are the parts that go, and this is the one where both are covered and one you can swap yourself.

“Grey fabric sofa, two kids and a spaniel. Saturday night a full glass of Ribena went down the side of the cushion. Sprayed it, scrubbed it, sucked it back, and the dirty tank came off full of purple. The cushion was dry by the time we sat down for Strictly. The hose comes off and goes in the sink, which my old Vax never did.”
“In twenty-four years the ones that come back to me aren't broken. They've got a hose held on with tape, a pump that stopped spraying, and a tank that stinks. This one's hose comes off, the pump's covered, and both tanks lift off and go under the tap.”
Who should not buy it
- You want to wash a whole room of carpet. Hire a Rug Doctor for the day, or get a man in. A spot cleaner is for spots
- You need warm water for greasy marks. The Hoover HS5 Heat and the Bissell ProHeat warm it, and this does not
- You want a brush that spins for you. The Vax Pet-Design does, and on ground-in chocolate it was better
- You want a big brand name over everything else. Buy the Bissell SpotClean Pro at Argos and keep a strong back

How we tested
The house is a 1990s three-bed semi in Stockport. A cream stair carpet, a grey fabric three-seater, a spaniel, and a Vauxhall Zafira on the drive. Every machine met the same sofa cushion, the same fourth stair, the same landing carpet and the same rear car seat. The order never changed. Spray, scrub, suck, one slow dry stroke.
Each machine faced 30 stains over six weeks: six each of blackcurrant squash, coffee with milk, muddy spaniel paw, chocolate and a porridge-and-milk mix standing in for toddler sick. For the water test we sprayed 500 ml into the sofa cushion, sucked it back, and weighed the dirty tank on a 1 g kitchen scale. Then we touched the cushion every hour until it was dry. At the end, Ian Wrigley took every machine apart with us.
- "Water pulled back out" is the weight of the dirty tank after one 500 ml spray and one full pass, less the empty tank. We ran it three times per machine and took the middle figure
- "Dry" means dry to the touch on the top and down the side of the cushion. We checked on the hour
- "Gone in one pass" means no mark and no ring in daylight the next morning, after one spray-scrub-suck
- Noise is the maker's printed figure. We did not have a sound meter. We did sit in the lounge with each one and note whether you could hold a conversation
- Prices are the shops' own on 18 October 2026, listed in the sources at the bottom

The five things we scored
- Water pulled back out25% of the score
500 ml sprayed into the same sofa cushion. We weighed what came back, then timed the cushion to dry. Six of nine were damp at bedtime.
- Stain gone in one pass20% of the score
Blackcurrant, coffee, muddy paw, chocolate and sick. Spray, scrub, suck, one dry stroke. Did the mark go, or leave a ring?
- Noise and living with it20% of the score
How loud it is in a lounge. Whether the cord reaches the top of the stairs. How far the hose gets from the body. Weight on the stairs.
- Tanks and the clean-up15% of the score
How much it holds before a refill. Whether the dirty tank lifts off and tips out clean. Whether it smelt a week later.
- Guarantee, spares and shampoo rules20% of the score
How long the guarantee is and what it needs from you. Whether you can buy a hose. Whether your own shampoo voids it.
What we did not score
Watts, hard floors, pet-mess cups and the number of attachments in the box. Every machine here sprayed water and sucked it back. Nobody in our group had used a spot cleaner on a tiled floor or wanted to.
Keep Vanish and a cloth, and hire a Rug Doctor for the big job
If a spill is small and fresh, a spray of Vanish, a damp cloth and a dry towel will do it. We did that on three stains before the test began and two came out. That costs about £4 and it is the best value on this page. Keep the bottle.
For a whole lounge carpet, hire a Rug Doctor from B&Q or Morrisons for about £30 a day. It does a room in an hour. Owners on MoneySavingExpert say what happens next: "the place smells horrible. Like damp old towels" and "it had taken 3 days to dry and stank the house out". Use it once a year, on a warm day, with the windows open.
What neither does is the reason you are reading this. The glass of blackcurrant on Saturday. The dog on the landing at midnight. The car seat before the school run. For those you want a machine in the cupboard that pulls the water back out, and that is what we scored.
Why is it £179 when a similar-looking machine is £37 on Amazon?

This is the question we would ask, so here is the answer. The body of a spot cleaner is not the expensive part any more. A 500 W pump-and-motor body with two tanks is built in the same factories for several brands. That is why the £37 listings at the bottom of our table exist, and why one of them did a job on the blackcurrant.
What £179 buys is everything that is not the body. It is £30 more than the Bissell SpotClean Pro at full price, so here is the £30. A hose that unplugs and is sold on its own. Tanks that lift off and rinse. A stiff brush with a window and a soft brush for the sofa. Stock in a UK warehouse, so it arrives in days with a UK address on the box. 60 days to try it at home and send it back free of charge, not just the legal 14 days. A five-year guarantee on the motor, the pump and the hose, with no form and no shampoo rule, and spares kept for five years. That is the whole gap between the Amazon machine's D+ and the Vekto's A.
It is also why it does not cost as much as a Vax Pet-Design. There is no shop taking a cut and no advert in the Sunday supplement. You may not have heard of Vekto before its cordless hoover. Neither had we. That is what the 60 days are for. The maker's page lists everything in the box, down to the soft brush.
What to expect in the first month
The first stain
The colour of the water
You do one cushion to test it. The dirty tank comes off brown. You do the other two cushions, then the arms, then you go looking for the dog's bed.
Day 3
The sofa is dry by teatime
You do the sofa after lunch and sit on it after tea. Nobody puts a towel down. You stop asking whether it will leave a ring.
Week 1
One fill, both tanks under the tap
The three-seater on one fill. The dirty tank lifts off and tips out in one go. Both tanks go on the draining board and the hose unplugs and goes in the sink.
Month 1
It lives in the hall cupboard
It is 3.5 kg and sits on a stair tread, so it gets used on the Tuesday, not saved for the Sunday. And you still have 30 days left to send it back free.
Before you buy
Finish on a dry stroke
Most wet sofas are not the machine's fault. Spray, scrub, then suck with the trigger off, slowly, until the window on the brush runs clear. Then do it once more. Owners who do this get "almost dry". Owners who do not get the ring.
Count the dirty tank, not the clean one
The machine stops when the dirty tank is full, not when the clean one is empty. A 0.72-litre dirty tank cuts out a third of the way through a sofa. Look for a dirty tank at least two-thirds the size of the clean one. The winner's is 1.3 litres against 1.8.
Ask what happens when the hose splits
Every spot cleaner hose bends round the body for storage and every one hardens and splits eventually. Three things matter. Does the hose come off? Does anyone sell one? Does the guarantee name it? Vax, Shark and Bissell fail at least two. Ian Wrigley's tip: never wrap it tight, and hang it loose in the cupboard.
Use any low-foam carpet shampoo
Owners on MoneySavingExpert have used Astonish, 1001 and Dr Beckmann in every brand for years. The only rule is low foam: the minute it foams, suction stops. Vax, Shark and Hoover say their bottle or your guarantee. Check the small print before you buy, not after.
Rinse the tanks and leave them off
The smell complaint is always the same. A tank left with a splash of dirty water in it for a month. Tip the dirty tank, rinse both under the tap, suck a bowl of clean water through the hose, and leave the tanks off overnight to dry. Two minutes, and the machine never smells.
The real cost of a spot cleaner that leaves the sofa wet

One number from our owner group stuck with us. Nine households had bought a spot cleaner. Five had used it fewer than five times. Three of those five said the same thing: the sofa was wet for a day and they did not want to do that again. Between them they had spent about £700 on machines that live under the stairs, and one had hired a Rug Doctor since.
A spot cleaner that leaves the sofa dry is not a luxury. When the cushion is dry by teatime, the spill gets done on Saturday. When it means a wet sofa and a towel until Sunday, the spill gets a cloth and a shrug, and the mark stays. Every one of our testers cleaned more during the six weeks. They all gave the same reason. It was in the hall cupboard, it was light, and the sofa would be dry by the time anyone wanted to sit on it.
None of this is medical. A spot cleaner does not kill germs, treat allergies or make a home healthier, and no machine here claims to. Our claim is smaller and you can check it. A spot cleaner that leaves the sofa dry gets used more than one that does not.

The tester who disagreed
I would have put the Bissell SpotClean Pro first. It got one more stain out in one pass than the Vekto, and its tanks did the whole sofa and the stairs without a refill. I think the weight counts for too much. You carry it up once and it sits on the landing. The others outvoted me on the hose and on the guarantee that says three years on one page and two on another. On those two they are right, and I would not want to be the one whose hose splits in year three.
Rachel Dunne · One of our testers, who disagreed with the ranking
Questions people ask
Does a spot cleaner leave the sofa wet?
Some do. We sprayed 500 ml into the same cushion with each machine and weighed what came back. The Vekto got 390 ml back and the cushion was dry in three hours. The Vax Home Duo got 290 ml back and the cushion was damp at six. Finish with a slow dry stroke and most machines do better than the box suggests.
Is a Bissell SpotClean Pro better than a Vax SpotWash?
In our test, yes. The Bissell pulled 375 ml back out against the Vax Home Duo's 290, and its tanks are more than twice the size. It did 27 of 30 stains in one pass against 25. It is also 5.9 kg against 4.5, and neither hose comes off. The Vax is about £40 cheaper at Argos.
How loud is a spot cleaner, honestly?
Louder than your hoover. The printed figures here run from 80 dB on the Vekto to 89 dB on the Vax Home Duo. We could not hold a conversation next to any of them. None of our testers used one after the children were in bed. The 1.5 m hose on the winner lets you leave the body a bit further away.
Do I have to use the maker's own shampoo?
With a Vax, a Shark or a Hoover, yes if you want the guarantee. Vax's user guide says other solutions "will invalidate your guarantee". Bissell tolerates others. The Vekto allows any low-foam carpet shampoo and says so in the guarantee. Owners on MoneySavingExpert use Astonish and 1001 for a pound or two.
If I buy the cheap one, will I end up buying twice?
Often, yes. The £49 Vytronix we ran did a job on the blackcurrant. Then it left the cushion damp at bedtime, and its two-year warranty is a marketplace seller's promise with no UK phone number and no spare hose. The Vekto Spot Cleaner P30 comes with a hose you can buy and tanks that lift off. You get 60 days to try it with free returns, and five years on the motor, pump and hose.
What happens when the hose splits?
On a Vax or a Shark, you buy a new machine. Vax owners on Argos have asked for a replacement hose for years and been told no. Shark says its hose is "not sold as a separate part". On the winner the hose unplugs with one push, a spare is sold on its own, and it is covered for five years anyway.
Can I really send it back after using it for 60 days?
Yes. You get 60 days to try it at home. If it is not right, you send it back free of charge and get a full refund, even if you have used it. 60 days is about eight weekends of spills, plenty of time to decide. Check the 60-day guarantee on the maker's page.
Where can I buy the Vekto Spot Cleaner P30 and how long does delivery take?
It is sold direct from the maker's UK site and sent from a UK warehouse with free tracked delivery. There is no Amazon listing and no other shop. The maker's page shows the current price, everything in the box and the 60-day guarantee.
Our verdict
Start with the exceptions. If your job is a whole lounge carpet, hire a Rug Doctor for the day and open the windows. If you want a brush that spins for you and you can get the Vax Pet-Design at £110, buy it and register it that day. If you want the biggest tanks and a name you know, buy the Bissell SpotClean Pro at Argos. We would own one, as long as someone else carries it upstairs.
Most houses are like ours. A fabric sofa, a carpeted staircase, a car, and a dog or a child who spills. If that is your house, the result is not close. One machine pulled more of the water back out than anything else, so the sofa was dry by teatime. It did the three-seater on one fill. Its tanks lift off and rinse. Its hose unplugs and can be bought again. It is covered for five years with nothing to fill in, and it cost £179, £30 more than the Bissell.
Everyone in our group who replaced their old spot cleaner was glad they did.
Above £190 you are paying for a spinning brush. Below £100 you are paying for a wet sofa. In between, one machine pulled the water back out and covers its hose for five years.

- Where we bought each spot cleaner, 31 August to 5 September 2026: Vekto from shopvekto.com, Bissell SpotClean Pro and the Vax SpotWash Home Duo from Argos, Bissell SpotClean Pet Pro from Gerald Giles, Vax SpotWash Home Pet-Design from vax.co.uk, Shark StainStriker from Argos, Kärcher SE 3 Compact from Screwfix, Hoover HS5 from hoover-home.com, and the two marketplace machines from Amazon.co.uk.
- The test house was a 1990s three-bed semi in Stockport, about 90 m² over two floors. A cream stair carpet, a grey fabric three-seater, a spaniel and a Vauxhall Zafira. Each machine faced 30 laid stains between 6 September and 17 October 2026.
- Water recovery was weighed on a 1 g kitchen scale, zeroed on the empty dirty tank. One 500 ml spray and one full pass over the same sofa cushion, three runs per machine, middle figure kept. Dry time was checked by hand on the hour.
- Ian Wrigley, a professional carpet and upholstery cleaner in Macclesfield for 24 years, took every machine apart with us. No fee was paid and no product was supplied.
